Chavez: Venezuela to buy Embraer, Airbus jets

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that his government plans to buy new Embraer jets from Brazil as well as used Airbus jets to expand his country's state airline Conviasa.

Chavez said Venezuela will negotiate credit with the Brazilian Development Bank to buy up to 20 Embraer jets from Brazil.

Chavez thanked Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff "for the credit they're going to give us." He said the estimated cost of 20 jets would be $814 million.

The Venezuelan government had said earlier this month that Chavez approved plans to buy six Embraer jets. But during Chavez's Sunday television and radio program, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez laid out the options of buying either 10 or 20 Embraer jets.

"It's enough to see Venezuela's location on the map to conclude on the pressing need for us to have a very powerful airline," Chavez said.

Chavez's government has subsidized Conviasa since its launch in 2004. The president on Sunday did not provide information about how much the government has spent on the airline in recent years.

According to Conviasa's website, it currently has a fleet of 18 planes. In addition to domestic routes, Conviasa has international flights to cities including Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Damascus, Syria, among others.

Chavez also said Venezuela will buy four used Airbus 340-500 jets from an airline in the United Arab Emirates at a cost of about $60 million per plane.

Bolivian President Evo Morales, a Chavez ally, has announced similar plans to expand his country's state airline, Boliviana de Aviacion, or BoA.

Morales last month proposed to buy six Embraer 190 jets during a meeting with Rousseff in Caracas.

The Brazilian Government contributed to the early growth of Embraer giving it contracts and helping to increase its product line, and the company sold solely to the domestic market until 1975.

While military aircraft made up the majority of Embraer's products during the 1970s by 1985 a regional airliner had debuted, the Brasilia Aimed at the export market, this plane marked the first of Embraer's highly successful small airliners.

In 1974 the company started to produce Piper Aircraft light planes under license. Piper first put together knock-down kits in their US factory for Embraer to assemble & market in Brazil & Latin America] but by 1978 most of the parts and components were being sourced locally. Between 1974 and 2000 nearly 2500 license-built Pipers were produced by Embraer.

They now export worldwide with local used technologies !

Thanks for the information; I see a lot of inaccurate statements about the Embraer on these posts.

Unfortunately, some Americans have the idea that there are no brains south of the Rio Grande. Partly, it's not their fault but the fault of the media conglomerate that does a good job of brainwashing people. Brazil is indeed on the way to become one of the fifth largest economies in the word. Besides the success of Embraer, I point out Petrobras, Brazil's oil giant. With the exploration of the new oil reserves, Brazil will become a major oil exporter in the next 20 years.

You seem to speak from experience. You were probably that whale in the pink tube top buying the massive box of Chips Ahoy.

What's wrong with buying South American? For the longest time South Americans have been buying American (or rather North American) goods from music to movies to high tech (you name it). Your comment reveals a certain prejudice. Wait a few more years and you'll a new Latin America rise with more economic power than ever! Ahora es la vez de nosotros los latino-americanos.

Not only is Bolivia buying these jets, it plans on launching a $500 million satellite. The 2nd poorest country in the world will propel itself into space so that it can take Landsat pics of its coca fields. Such progress, the Aymara Pachamama will bless this absurd, bloated debt load.
      • Chris 4 mths ago
I meant to say: the 2nd poorest country in South America. May the Pachamama forgive me my typo!

The US is on the way to bankruptcy (as the current economic crisis indicates). Wars fought by the US have been put on credit cards and now the public debt soars to trillions of dollars. Therefore, the "absurd, bloated debt load" expression applies equally here.

Establishing credit is just a way for venezuela to hook up Brazil for later trade deals.

What a loser! Buying used Airbus jets. This country would be in mud huts without oil. No entrepreneurs, no manufacturing and ZERO technology companies. They have a bleak future!

these comments express the ingorance of brainwashed americans. the media tells you what to think and you devour it with fervor. the american empire is fighting hard to maintain its control, but at the expense of its citizens. all of these wars, just to maintain cheap oil, to maintain the army needed to maintain wars. its a vicious circle that leads to taxpayer serfdom. fortunately, many are awaking to the truth. will you?

I would worry about any investor, investing in this country, as this loser in charge will just steal the planes using the government, like he did with the oil, cement, food and whatever else he has stolen from foreign investors in the past???

Venezuela's success with subsidized national airlines is abysmal:

Viasa and Avensa no longer exist, and Conviasa was created by Chavez because the country needed an international carrier. Aeropostal only has SIX planes, to only SEVEN destinations, in VZ and the Caribbean. (Avensa still exists on paper, with only one plane.)

Basically, running an airline is tough enough, and if anyone thinks that Hugo's leftist government is capable of doing so, dream on. I flew Avensa dozens of times before it was nationalized, and it was a pleasure. I flew them AFTER they were nationalized a few times and I was scared to death. (I did a lot of work in VZ in the 80s and early 90s.)

This is a stupid move by Hugo, but for him, what else is new? The man majored in stupidity at his military academy.

There's no financial gain to be made by Conviasa with these purchases--they will go deep, deep into the red. This is especially true because of VZ's imploding economy, and the absolute, 100% lack of foreign investment in the country. I mean, he needs new planes to fly to SYRIA!?

The airline business should be left to private companies, because it sucks money left and right. Even if you have to assist those companies with bailouts and special breaks, that's still better than government hacks running it.
