    Cher takes to Twitter to defend Chaz Bono on DWTS

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cher is taking to Twitter to defend her son Chaz Bono.

    The superstar posted several tweets Wednesday defending his participation on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars." Bono is the first transgender competitor on the hit ABC show.

    Cher says her son, who was born female and underwent surgery to become a man, is being "viciously attacked" on blogs and message boards since the new cast was announced Monday.

    "This is Still America right? It took guts 2 do it," Cher wrote, adding that she supports him no matter what he chooses to do.

    "Mothers don't stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who (mess) with their children!" the 65-year-old singer wrote.

    Bono, 42, is paired with pro dancer Lacey Schwimmer on the reality show, where celebrities and their professional partners perform various ballroom dances for judges' scores and viewer votes.

    "Dancing" fans have posted both angry and supportive comments on the show's message boards. One called the casting choice "disgusting" and said "ABC should be ashamed of theirselves for harassing mainstream Americans and Christains."

    Another wrote: "I never and mean NEVER watch DWTS but will this season to support/vote for (Chaz)."

    On his own Twitter page, Bono described himself as "the luckiest guy around" and thanked his fans for their support. He also thanked Cher.

    "Thanks for all your support mom," he wrote. "The haters are just motivating me to work harder and stay on DWTS as long as I possibly can."

    The 13th season of "Dancing With the Stars" is set to premiere Sept. 19.

      Thanks for correcting yourself, AP, from the first release. Chaz (formerly Chastity) is NOT Cher's only child. She also has a son, Elijah Blue, by Greg Allman.

      He/she still has to sit to pee, so dancing with a girl on the show is wrong. Of course dancing with a guy is wrong, too. Above all else, he/she is not a celebrity and that's where the show went off course.

      Pretending a mentally ill person is not mentally ill does not help them at all. It is not "bullying" that causes the suicides, it is the mental illness and the suffering caused by the behavior associated with it. As long as liberals abuse these people by pretending they are normal in order to portray themselves as "caring", those people will continue to engage in destructive behavior, and they will continue to kill themselves at a high rate. Oh well, at least you "care".

      As a heterosexual, married mother, I am looking forward to having Chaz on the show. He represents an underserved population that the general public is largely uninformed about. Ignorance breeds fear and hatred. He is just a person who is living authentically. It would be nice for others to stop being so dissatisfied with their own lives so that they stop spending their time criticizing others.

        I think the word "authentically" was about the worst word you could use. "Authentic" means "original", "genuine" "unaltered". That's the exact OPPOSITE of what Chastity has tried to be. Furthermore, I'm not ignorant. "Ignorant" would be anyone who believes that just because the lady took a few hormones and cut her hair off, she is AUTHENTICALLY a man.

      If it weren't for the fact that this person was born to Sonny and Cher as a little blond haired girl and brought on to their show, nobody would even consider using this person as a freak attraction to draw in viewers.         Aren't you a bigot for the comments you made to those who don't support "Chaz"? Opinions and beliefs are diverse and should be allowed regardless if you are for or against something; don't shame them for not supporting the LGBT movement.
