Chesapeake to cut natural gas production

NEW YORK (AP) — Faced with decade-low natural gas prices that have made some drilling operations unprofitable, Chesapeake Energy Corp. says it will drastically cut drilling and production of the fuel in the U.S.

Chesapeake, the second largest U.S. natural gas producer, said Monday that it plans to cut its current daily production by 8 percent. Over a year, that means the company would produce the same or slightly less natural gas in 2012 than it did in 2011. Chesapeake produces about 9 percent of the nation's natural gas.

That's a change from the dramatic increase in domestic output seen in recent years. Chesapeake and other drillers have learned to tap enormous reserves of natural gas trapped in shale formations under several states using a controversial drilling method known as hydraulic fracturing combined with horizontal drilling. The drillers force millions of gallons of water and sand, laced with chemicals, into compact rock to create cracks that serve as escape routes for the gas.

Extreme weather for two winters and two summers kept natural gas prices high by boosting demand for home heating and power generation. But this season's mild winter weather especially in the Northeast and Upper Midwest, has crimped demand and led to a glut.

Natural gas futures slipped to $2.32 per 1,000 cubic feet last week, their lowest levels since 2002, before rising slightly to $2.34 on Friday. Prices have fallen 23 percent since the beginning of the year. Storage levels of the fuel are 21 percent higher than their 5-year average for this time of year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The drop in price has meant lower revenues and profits for drillers. Analysts surveyed by FactSet estimate that Chesapeake's earnings fell to $2.81 per share in 2011, excluding special items, from $2.95 per share in 2010. They say at today's prices only the least expensive, most productive natural gas wells remain profitable for drillers.

In trading in New York Monday, natural gas prices rose 6.4 percent to $2.546 per 1,000 cubic feet, getting a boost from the Chesapeake announcement. Chesapeake shares gained 5.7 percent to $22.15.

Drillers had already begun to shift their drilling activity toward shale formations and other regions that produce oil and other liquid hydrocarbons. Strong global demand has kept oil prices high and made these drilling operations extraordinarily profitable.

Chesapeake said it would cut its current activity in so-called dry-gas regions by half, to 24 rigs, by the second quarter. That's 67 percent fewer rigs than an average of 75 rigs the company had in use last year.

Chesapeake increased natural gas production by 13.5 percent from 2010 to 2011. It now plans to cut spending on natural gas regions to $1 billion in 2012, down from $3.1 billion in 2011.

The plan calls for a cut of 500 million cubic feet of gas per day, about 8 percent of its current production, in two drilling regions in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.

The move is designed to reduce the glut of natural gas in the U.S., and therefore increase prices. But analysts caution that drillers historically have reneged on plans to cut output in times of low prices, bowing to pressure from investors to increase production.

Also, even as drillers avoid dry-gas regions, they are aggressively increasing drilling in regions rich in oil and other liquids. Those regions also produce large amounts of natural gas, which will help keep total natural gas production high and will likely keep prices relatively low.

And to think I drive by a Chesapeake billboard bragging about how cheap and efficient natural gas is on the way to work everyday. I wonder if it'll be there tomorrow?

Bring on automobiles that use natural gas and watch the price go up than.

AND yet the energy industry keeps screaming about domestic production untill there is a glut and not enough profit, then cap it off and wait for a good price. This is what happend to oil in this country. They are NOT in the supply business they ARE in the shortage business.

No they are in the profit making business. Do you go to work to lose money?

      Yep.
THEY don't care that it is needed, just where the biggest PROFIT is.

Time to cut production start price gouging, just the way Republicans like it.

      This is simply price fixing!

While this is price fixing it is not illegal unless it reduced output along with another companies collusion. Chesapeake energy represents 9% of output. So does OPEC. 9% is large enough to manipulate an energy market

Good, that means the wild brook and brown trout stream in northern Pennsylvania that I fish and the excellent spring water in the area that is all part of the state forest area that was auctioned off to the highest bidder by the state, blatantily breaking the state Constitution Article 1 Section 27 will be safe for at least a few more years!

Supply and demand, folks. They're giving away natural gas right now and it's no longer profitable enterprise to drill. .99 cent gasoline is not an American birth right, neither is cheap natural gas. The Europeans are paying 6 to 8 times as much for the same stuff. I own natural gas and it has to pay or the whole industry will collapse.
      • Mongo 4 mths ago
        lol, you own natural gas?
      • Joseph 4 mths ago
perhaps you mean you either receive royalty payment for natural gas or you have invested in compaies which produce or transport natural gas ...???????

I love it when the same people who rally against taxes and social benefits compare the cost of fuel here in the US to that in Europe.

I would much rather pay roughly double the cost for fuel (Maybe even some of those European high mpg diesels we don't get here.) and get all the social benefits it helps provide, than pay the $1000 per month for my part of health insurance plus deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance, itemized limits (And what ever other method of making me pay ever more for a supposedly covered benefit.). Before you start spouting off about waits and quality of service, report after report keeps showing the US healthcare system as last among industrialized nations. Last in quality, last in expected life span, last in satisfaction. As for waiting? I already have to wait. Wait for enough money to pay the co-pays and deductibles just for the office visit, wait for an appointment, and god forbid I need any tests try to get an estimate of costs, try to get insurance approval in advance, then try to save enough money to pay my part that they expect up front.

You idiots that compare US with Europe want to strip away the few benefits we have here in the US, including the ones we pay for separately. You want to make everything privately run by for profit corporations and let them govern themselves. You want Social Security and Medicare reduced or eliminated, with no eliminating the related taxes, no giving back of all the taxes already collected to pay for it and no protections of people when they get old and become a drag on corporate profits.

I would much rather pay their fuel costs and their taxes and reap all the benefits they enjoy than live in your ideally republican dog eat dog, everything for profit and nothing for the public good, vision of a hate filled world while having people like you try to get me used to the idea of and be grateful for prices that are slightly less than theirs.

Anything to protect the inflated energy prices is good for these right wing dipshits. You guys are really pathetic. Oil is so overpriced it no longer is even funny. I hope you all lose your #$%$ when the bubble breaks!

You buy oil and the products it produces EVERYDAY. You're supporting the current price point.
    • gfunk  •  4 mths ago
This should be illegal... market tampering at its best.

      Bend over, here it comes.
    • SRV  •  4 mths ago
Because you know, anything us right wing dipshits can do to increase the price of oil so we can get larger bonuses next year. What a bunch of lame#$%$

I am cheering on the President' energy policy which is war on domestic energy. Shut down fracking, coal mining, natural gas production, offshore drilling, state of the art pipelines - the dirty fossil fuels. I am prepared to pay $5.00 a gallon or more for gas and even as much as they pay for gas in Europe ($14.00/gallon). We do not need fossil fuels - windmills and sunshine can provide all of our energy needs. But, I live in a cave, get food stamps and unemployment and my car was repossesed last month thanks to Bush.
      • DABOMB 4 mths ago
Dan, did anyone teach you the meaning of the word 'moderation'? There are energy answers, unfortunately 'fracking' is one of the most dangerous in the business. You may not pay $15.00 a gallon for gas, but you'll be paying the equivilent to have water shipped in weekly to the people whos lives were ruined by fracking.
      • Mongo 4 mths ago
lol, both of u are crazy, if they shut down all of that we would be back to medevil times, be careful what u wish for. You cant have your cake and eat it to, something always has to give, we would have to do without so many things that make everyones lives better
      • Joseph 4 mths ago
Hummm..still do not understand how " fracking" (forceing formations open with sand and water ) about 1 to 2 miles deep can ruin acquaffiers thousands of feet above the "frac"...instead of the frac being the problem seems to me that faualty tubing (pipe) or faulty cememt jobs are to blame.Try looking up some facts before accepting the media line on things
