    Chicago Board Of Trade (CBOT)

    A Chicago-based exchange that trades a large portion of all futures contracts. The Chicago Board of Trade was founded in 1848, and its members in the 1860s began trading the first modern standardized futures contracts on grain. Trading there took off during the Civil War. The Board of Trade was, for most of its existence, a membership organization, owned and run by its members. It originally was home to agricultural futures markets, but its members and staff also founded the Chicago Board Options Exchange and created interest-rate futures markets. The CBOT became a for-profit company and went public in 2005.  In July of 2007, CBOT merged with its longtime rival the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) to form CME Group. The CBOT as part of CME Group continues to operate and is still best-known for being the home of many agricultural futures contracts.
