On January 7, 2012, at the Broadway Playhouse, Hollywood's finest will be honored at the Chicago Film Critics Awards, which features hosts Richard Roeper and WLS Radio's Roe Conn.
The winners, announced on December 19, 2011, include outstanding films and stunning performances. "The Tree of Life" received Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Cinematography; Michelle Williams won for her work as screen legend Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn," Albert Brooks' strong dramatic performance in "Drive" earned him a top acting prize, and awards for Best Screenplays went to two of the most impressive films of 2011, "Moneyball" and "The Artist."
It has not yet been confirmed which winners will be present on January 7, but in recognition of their work and contributions in film, Honorary Awards recipients James Earl Jones, Dennis Farina, and Jason Segel will be in attendance at the ceremony.
James Earl Jones, the brilliant actor and infamous voice behind Darth Vader, has starred in a long list of films, including "Patriot Games," "Jesus of Nazareth," "Field of Dreams," and "The Hunt for Red October."
Jason Segel, the co-writer/star of the very funny 2011 "The Muppets," was the co-producer and character writer of "Get Him to the Greek," starred along with Russell Brand and Jonah Hill in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," and was hilarious in "Knocked Up" and "I Love You, Man."
It's good to see local native and former Chicago police officer Dennis Farina recognized for his long, wonderful career in television and film. His resume includes "Law & Order," "Miami Vice," "Saving Private Ryan," "Get Shorty," "Midnight Run," and many other esteemed accomplishments.
The amazingly talented Hollywood legend Shirley MacLaine will receive the Commitment to the Craft Award, but unfortunately, she will not be appearing in person to accept her honor. In addition, the comedic excellence of The Second City earns a well-deserved presentation from the CFCA with The Big Shoulders Award.
The Chicago Film Critics Association, founded in 1990 by film critic Sue Kiner, has notable members that include some of the biggest, most-respected names in the industry: Roger Ebert, Richard Roeper, Michael Wilmington, Nick Digilio, Bill Zwecker, and Dean Richards. In addition to the annual awards presentations, the organization holds roundtable discussions at colleges and universities and takes a stand on important issues affecting the industry and/or artists' rights, according to their website.
With the funny, outspoken, and charismatic hosting skills of WLS's radio duo Richard Roeper and Roe Conn, this should be a highly entertaining event. Tickets for the Chicago Film Critics Awards, which take place on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Broadway Playhouse in Water Tower Place, can be purchased online through Ticketmaster.com.
Patricia Batson has worked in television and film productions as a background extra in Hollywood, California, and Chicago, Illinois, as well as for local advertising agencies, TV, and radio stations. Her resume includes "The Chicago Code," "Glee," "Grey's Anatomy," "The Dilemma," and "Get Him to the Greek."
