Chicago looks to follow Kansas City’s lead and get into the gigabit fiber game

It isn’t often that proud Chicagoans will admit to envying anyone living in Kansas City, but it looks as though Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel is eyeing Kansas City’s Google (GOOG) Fiber network and thinking, “We want some of that too.” GigaOM reports that Emanuel is considering laying down fiber infrastructure in Chicago since city workers are already tearing up streets to overhaul the Windy City’s water distribution system. GigaOM also says Emanuel wants to “invest in broadband and Wi-Fi infrastructure to expand this nascent ‘Digital Alley’ to new tech zones and as well as bring cheap internet access to underserved areas throughout the city.”
