It's beginning to look like the holidays are upon us in Chicago. Whether you are outside, at work, visiting homes, or dining out, you will not only see that the season has begun, but you can also feel and smell it everywhere you go. The fragrance of cinnamon, ginger, and pine fills the air, with wreaths on the doors and trees being carried on top of cars - these are all timeless traditions that remind me of a Norman Rockwell painting. In the spirit of the season, here are some of the Chicago-area restaurants that really know how to decorate for the holidays in a big way, creating an awesome ambience to wow kids and adults.

There is such a grand history at this beautiful hotel, and during the holiday season, you will see lovely decorations, trees, and light displays, plus my favorite, the gingerbread house. To add to the seasonal good times, fans of "A Christmas Carol" will appreciate dining at the Charles Dickens Buffet, which is a Drake holiday tradition. The buffet opens mid-December and prices are $58 for adults, $30 for children.

When it comes to Christmas in Chicago, most people will agree that The Walnut Room is part of a long tradition. The emphasis here is on the beloved, huge Christmas tree in the dining room and all the pretty decorations. A word of advice - you will need a lot of patience when you visit because the lines are long, and the over-zealous crowds can be challenging at times.

Located in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, adults can relax with a cold brew here as they gaze upon one of the most elaborate and entertaining Christmas decorations in the city. There are over 80 animated creations, like a giant Santa in the beer garden and a fancy skiing display complete with a ski lift and happy skiers gliding down a snow-capped hill. The holidays can be a stressful time for many people, so this is a good place to just unwind and enjoy all the joyous visuals.

Edelweiss in Norridge, Illinois, was voted Chicago's No. 1 German restaurant, featuring German and American food. During the holidays, the decor is cozy and charming with garland lights and hanging ornaments. The staff are friendly and efficient, and one of the best parts is that during certain days and hours, you can listen to a live band play authentic and contemporary songs for dining patrons.
