    China bans toddler palm-reading assessments

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has banned kindergartens in a northern province from offering palm-reading tests that the schools had claimed could predict toddlers' intelligence level and potential, state news agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday.

Although many parents in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province, eagerly brought their children to be tested, some later complained about the high cost and raised questions about the testing method, which test-givers said could reveal the children's aptitude in music, mathematics and languages.

"We have issued a circular to criticize the three kindergartens that offered palm-reading tests for 1,200 yuan ($190) per person," Xinhua quoted Ma Zhaoxing, the local education bureau chief, as saying, adding that the practice had been banned.

Authorities were investigating whether the company that designed the tests, Shanxi Daomeng Culture Communication Co., Ltd., had violated any laws, Xinhua said.

Fortune-telling, including palm-reading, has deep roots in Chinese tradition, although China's leaders have discouraged and punished devotees of the practice which they brand superstition.

"although China's leaders have discouraged and punished devotees of the practice which they brand superstition."
What bull. You could go to some of the biggest tourist areas of China, fully financed and supported by the government, that have palm readers and fortune tellers all over the place. The government couldn't care less about such old traditions, and I wouldn't be surprised if government officials didn't regularly get their fortunes told. But it's nice to see that they're at least starting to crack down on potentially fraudulent practices.

When I was a child I went to a Chinese palm reader. She looked at my hand and said: You have been masturbating.
I said: Hey you are good. Can you tell me anything about my future?
She looked at my face and said: You will be masturbating for many years.

I was going to laugh until I realized that people in this country think a virgin gave birth to the son of God and that prayers heal sick people.

If the kindergarten is private, and the parents want to waste their money, let them. If the kindergarten is publicly funded, this is a move in the right direction - welcome to the 20th century. (Problem is, this is the 21st.).

China the superstitious nutcase of the world! Not even decades of communism could get rid of it.... Hey China, don't you know that it's bad luck to be superstitious?
