China blasts US over credit rating downgrade

BEIJING (AP) — China, the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt, demanded Saturday that America tighten its belt and confront its "addiction to debts" in the wake of Standard & Poor's decision to downgrade the U.S. credit rating.

China currently owns $1.2 trillion of U.S. Treasury debt, the largest stake of any central bank. The commentary carried by the state-run Xinhua News Agency was Beijing's first official response to the S&P decision.

"The U.S. government has to come to terms with the painful fact that the good old days when it could just borrow its way out of messes of its own making are finally gone," Xinhua said.

It said the rating cut would be followed by more "devastating credit rating cuts" and global financial turbulence if the U.S. fails to learn to "live within its means."

"China, the largest creditor of the world's sole superpower, has every right now to demand the United States to address its structural debt problems and ensure the safety of China's dollar assets," it said.

Xinhua said the U.S. must slash its "gigantic military expenditure and bloated social welfare costs" and accept international supervision over U.S. dollar issues.

Last month, China's top general, Chen Bingde, also linked America's financial woes to its military budget and asked whether paring back on defense spending wouldn't be the best thing for U.S. taxpayers.

Such comments reflect Beijing's desire that Washington reduce its military presence in Asia. The U.S., rattled by China's military buildup, also routinely chides Beijing for its fast-growing defense spending.

Xinhua also suggested a new global reserve currency might be necessary to replace the dollar, a position China has frequently advocated.

"Mounting debts and ridiculous political wrestling in Washington have damaged America's image abroad," Xinhua said. "To cure its addiction to debts, the United States has to re-establish the common sense principle that one should live within its means."

Jitters over the U.S. handling of its debt problems were also being felt elsewhere in Asia, said Kishore Mahbubani, Singapore's former ambassador to the United Nations.

The dean of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy said the last-minute agreement by the U.S. Congress to lift the debt limit and avoid default has policymakers in Asia questioning the stability of U.S. global leadership.

"It's definitely undermined U.S. credibility," Mahbubani said late Friday. "Everyone is wondering if you have such a dysfunctional political process, how can you provide global leadership. It's very dangerous for the world."

Read the treaty. All to kill jobs of American worker. Difference in tariff and wages favors China. The treaty was sold with a lie. Not fair trade. Far from it.

We need to start manufacturing products in America. We have turned our manufacturing and jobs over to other countries. As a nation, we need to stop this practice and find common ground that allows labor and manufacturing to work together again. My Father always told me to give an honest days work and you will receive and honest days pay. We built our country on this principle. Why did we stop?

Because it became more profitable to 'invest' rather than 'build'....ala pump and dump...ala ponzi scheme....ala pyramid schemes.....why in the world would anyone go to the trouble and expense of making something and selling it when they can just sit on their money and move it around from one bubble to the next....a few finger clicks per day and you can have anything you desire...provided of course you already have money and don't get caught at the tail end of a bubble bursting...good luck all!

If China holds only 1.2 trillion and Japan less where is the rest. Do American Banks and the rich in America have the rest? Just asking

It's hard to eat our peas using chopsticks, Mr. President. How humiliating to be lectured to about our spending addiction by the Chinese Communists, one of the most brutal regimes in the world. But, when someone is your banker, they have every right to question your financial stability. We've done it to ourselves, now we have to find our own way back. None of the countries that we have helped are going to help us to get out of this mess.

The United States of America is a strong and proud nation that has helped many countries over the years, but...Today we need to stop foolish spending outside our country. We give Billions upon Billions of "AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS" attempting to buy friendship from other countries that openly hate AMERICA. There is Famine in some portions of Africa, children starving to death while we give..I mean give money to China, {by the way, we borrow this money from China} to enhance their Internet and develop their infrastructure. We have military bases all over the world. These military bases are strategic and meant to protect the country they are in and defend the United States. Why? Why do we do this without receiving payment from these countries. We are their military, their first line of defense and it is basically free!! We need to evaluate where "OUR TAX DOLLARS" are being spent. I am not saying, stop helping other countries. What I am saying is, Stop helping other countries until we can afford to do so; without borrowing the money from another country. In most cases we borrow money from the countries we protect, explain that!!

Washington, having sold off America to the Chinese, have now given the Chinese the "right" to criticize us. Another embarrassment caused by incompetent political leadership in Washington.
      .
The "shining city on the hill" is dilapidated because we can no longer afford the cost of upkeep! The Political Class has squandered our wealth and our future as a great nation.
      .
These are sad times for all Americans which will only get worse unless we act in 2012 and vote all career politicians out of office and replace them with public servants who love our country as much as we do.

Who ever thought that China would be telling the U.S. how to run it's economy? Since they are holding over a trillion $ of our debt they sure have the right. I am not a fan of doing business with any communist country ever! Don't blame the lender. blame the borrower.

This has been coming for a long, long, time, and our wonderful representatives ,senators and various White House administrations just voted for more of the same. They are the problem, they have no solutions just rhetoric.
We need to do referendum recalls of all of them, one by one, investigate each one in depth and throw a few into prison when found guilty of corruption. Then watch the rest of them start realizing they are there to serve Americans, not rob them.

Unfortunately, China is correct. Look at everyone around you. Most are drowning in credit card debt and up-side down on their real properties. Both houses in washington are just like the common Joe. WE are close to owing what we make. Look, we are a 17 Trillion economy (what we make) and we owe14 Trillion dollars. Simple math sez that we are maxed out, why? We only have 3 Trillion left over to pay for our upkeep and interest payments on our loans. If we grow our debt to 17 Trillion, that equals or debt and we won;t have room for anything else including the interst payments on our loans. The death spiral follows. there will be round after round of credit down-grade until the value of our securities are worthless. China is right, we need to live within our means. What we cannot afford to pay cash, we simply cannot afford it. Time to cut all the senseless military spending, discretionary/pork barel spending, and foreign aid and stimulate our manufacturing and small business infrastructures - revive these two - the two main sources of American employment,

A sad day, indeed, when the communist Chinese can give the US an @$$-chewing about how we should run our country, and be RIGHT about it! I think the first "belt tightening" we need to do is tack on tariffs to every piece of Chinese crap they send to our shores, and make our products price-competitive. THAT should make the dinks happy!
    • w  •  9 mths ago
Put a 50% tariff on Chinese goods(crap) and apply it to the deficit.
    • upthinker  •  9 mths ago
I can't argue with a thing they said. I don't like it, but they are correct.
