    China Cuts U.S. Debt Holdings

The Chinese government reduced its holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds to its lowest level on the year by $14.2 billion in October.

Analysts said the decline is mostly due to a stronger dollar, meaning the Chinese government has to spend more renmimbi (RMB) to acquire the same amount of bonds it purchased a month prior, when their currency was stronger.  Moreover, media reports cited declining positions of Chinese banks for foreign exchange purchases, an indicator of capital outflows.

The RMB has been selling off lately as local Chinese see a grim forecast for the global economy. Their local economy, meanwhile, is also slowing in response.

"The low level of China's holding of U.S. debt indicates the huge pressure of capital outflow that the country has been faced with," Lu Zhengwei, chief economist with Industrial Bank Co Ltd was quoted saying in China Daily on Saturday.

"The central bank is increasing its holdings of dollars in cash, preparing to sell them in the market if necessary to offset the impact of liquidity outflows," he said.

China held a total of $1.13 trillion of U.S. Treasury debt as of October 2011, roughly accounting for 24% of total foreign holdings of U.S. debt, according to the Treasury Department. China is the largest foreign holder of U.S. Treasurys.

Corporate USA set up shop in China ($1.36/hr.) to circumvent the high wage of the USA middle class, then turns around and imports those foreign goods back into the USA for the dwindling middle class to purchase; mostly on their credit card. The Free Trade Agreements that were supposed to open up foreign markets to the exportation of our Made in USA goods only opened the door for our corporate CEOs, along with the blessings of their board of directors, to export our JOBS!!! Our industrial might was the backbone of our economic might fueled by the middle class. A thriving middle class makes purchases (there's the "demand" you keep hearing about!), pays local, state, and federal taxes that fill the system's coffers. We were the envy of the world. (I might add; name another country that GAVE away $$$billions/yr. in aid to help other countries economically like the USA?) And now, after just 30 years of incessant lobbying for privileges and policies that benefit the top 1%, we are a nation in decline, with an ever increasing downward pressure on wages so we, the middle class, can "compete" with 3rd world countries for our share of jobs that our elite, and the politicians that their money has paid for, gave away for a higher profit share. Sickening!

Free trade is fine....with countries with a similar work force. IE Japan, South Korea, Canada. Not Mexico or China....

Matforce this is one of the best exsplanations i have read. I so agree with what you wrote.i am so frustrated at the situation and get so mad because no one will do anything about it. What do we do ? How can we make them change things ? The longer we as a nation put upwith this the harder it is going to be to bounce back.

Buy American... if you can still find anything made here. I was searching for a pair of socks as a stocking stuffer and looked through the entire wall of socks because I could not find ONE pair that said made in the US. (And no, I was not in walmart but a department store.)
      • Ellliot 5 mths ago
I agree. We have a global economy. We must either be more productive or work for less. Protectionism doesn't work and is self-defeating.

China has its own hidden problems at home. One out of four factory related to export have failed or bankrupt in the past year.

      Bet you didnt know that!

That's no different from US small business failures. Actually... it would be a little better than the 30% failure rate in the US. So?

        Actually I did.
      • Citizen I am 5 mths ago
Lets not forget that a great number of the factory workers in China have been on strike for more even distribution of wages from the profits generated by the goods they make.

It's hard for me to believe the amont of money the US owes China. It's time the American people learn to bite the bullet and get ourselves out of hock to China. There was a time we wouldn't have thought of borrowing money from them. It's like owing your soul to the devil.
      • Deutschland Heute 5 mths ago
Just how you propose to do this when nobody likes higher taxes and everybody wants tax cuts???
      • D 5 mths ago
It's true nobody wants higher taxes and such to help us get out of debt but maybe it's time we stop handing out so much money to other countries. The president is always promising to send money to other countries who ask for help. Also maybe it's time people learn who our government really is and stop thinking it's some group who passes out money. We the people are really the backers behind our government. Everytime someone thinks they are getting something free from the government, they are really adding to our tax debt. There is no free ride in this country. Everything we want the government to supply is bought out of our tax dollars, plus the money they have borrowed from countries like China. We need to learn to live cheaper and quit asking the government to supply extras for us.Demand our government bites the billet and do with out a few things.I live on a budget. Wht doesn't our country?

        @ Deutschland Heute,
What we need are Tariffs placed on imported goods where we can make it to where the cost is equal to or slightly better to produce the product here in America than to import it. But that will never happen because big buisness would not allow their profit margins to be tampered with. They love making a ton of money on cheap imported goods that they can sell to us as IF it were produced here in America.
Manufacturing is what made America prosperous. The continual loss of our manufacturing base is destroying America. What kind of economy do you think we can sustain when everybody except for a very very very small percentage of it are all either in the Fast Food business or in the retail sector where everyone is making almost minimum wage?

At the end of WWII, the US was the largest oil manufacturer, and had the largest, most advanced factories in the world.
      Now we are not.
    • me  •  Richardson, United States  •  5 mths ago
We the people of the USA and only the people of the USA have the power to turn our country and economy around. If we stop buying crap from China, the manufacturing companies will have no choice but to go out of business or come back here to make or build their products. Whenever you can people, buy american.

All china has to do is place those bonds on the market and watch our country go into a tailspin. We never should sell our treasury holdings to foreigners.

I remember a time not so long ago, that anything with a made in China label meant that thing was junk. Growing up in the Mid-West. As a kid, there were numerous factories, big and small. Everyone worked somewhere. The streets were clean, people were happy. Our Zenith TV was made in Illinois, our car was made in Detroit. Most fresh food was from local sources, not Mexico or Singapore or Turkey. The U.S. was an exporting powerhouse. Made in the USA meant something. We were proud of who and what we were.
      -
We have relinquished our freedoms; nearly regulated, taxed and free traded ourselves out of existence. To say that we are going to buy American on everything is impossible. It didn't use to be. The main goals of whoever is made president in 2012 needs to be, restore national pride, restore stolen freedoms and make the USA great again.

The collective stupidty of corporate America's anticipation that China will bail out their sorry #$%$ is manifest. And the collective stupidity of the American consumer all too eager to buy cheap Chinese goods is pathetic. All that is occurring is that we are sending our technology, jobs, and money to a repressive Communist regime. Sunshine and lollipops for everyone. Brilliant.

BUY AMERICAN,is the best thing we can do ,, support your own country ,, HARD BUT POSSIBLE , IN A YEAR THERE WILL BE A TURNAROUND.... LOOK AT LABELS ,, I DO ,, YOU WILL PAY AN AVERAGE 10% more but well worth your JOB BEING THERE IN THE FUTURE IF WE HAVE ONE

Aside from the fact that the article clearly states that this is based on exchange rates and a strengthening dollar, there is also the concept of a very poor global economic outlook. Considering the need to shore up their own funds, why would anyone expect anyone else to simply purchase hazardous debt when those funds could be used to bolster their own economy? Is there some form of international "derivatives"? The best reason anyone could have for curtailing that type of expenditure is from the example we set in our own overall economy.
    • .  •  5 mths ago
Time to declare our trade arrangement as null and void as it was not handled freely nor fairly. Default on the debt and when China cuts-off shipment of goods, Americans can finally get back to work making things for our own consumption like we used to do.
    • right thing to do  •  5 mths ago
The new Motto should be, BUY American or do without. We will be glad we did in 10 years.
