China party official warns members over religion

BEIJING (AP) — Religious practice among Chinese Communist Party members is increasing and threatens its unity and national leadership, a top party official said in remarks reported Monday.

Party members are required to be atheists and must not believe in religion or engage in religious practice, said Zhu Weiqun, a member of the party's Central Committee and executive vice director of its United Front Work Department in charge of dealings with nonparty groups.

Religious practice is a growing trend, especially in areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, and must not be tolerated, Zhu said in comments published in the latest edition of the main party theoretical journal, Qiushi, and reported by the official Xinhua News Agency.

"Voices have appeared within the party calling for an end to the ban on religion, arguing in favor of the benefits of religion for party members and even claiming the ban on religion for party members is unconstitutional," Zhu said.

"In fact, our party's principled stance regarding forbidding members from believing in religion has not changed one iota," he said.

Zhu's stern remarks to the party's 80 million members come amid a spike in tensions between Beijing and the Vatican and crackdowns on independent churches, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and religious practice among Turkic Uighur Muslims in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.

The party ban on religious practice frequently also applies to all public servants and sometimes students, especially in minority areas such as Tibet and Xinjiang.

While it no longer actively works to eradicate religion as it did under Mao Zedong, the party remains deeply suspicious of religious practice and strictly controls when and where it can take place.

Churches must belong to official Protestant and Catholic religious associations, Imams must submit their sermons for vetting and Buddhist monks are forced to attend tedious and time consuming political indoctrination sessions demonizing Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

This is a good thing. I wish US government should implement the same thing. A government is working for all people from all religion background and not specific one. China is doing the right thing. Western and anti-China elements are doing what they do best that is distorting fact and misleading people about China. It is good thing that majority of Chinese are not fooled by the propaganda conducted by the anti-Chinese elements. Chinese are stand by their current government and looking forward to meet more success.

It is just utterly ridiculous that atheism is associated with communism as if capitalism is associated christianity....I am a Skeptic first Atheist second who believes that one should use education and logic to try and change minds not by force...The chinese culture is ridden with superstitions, logical fallacies, and mythologies....So I think the commie's are more worried that religion will divide the state through the different interpretations of the so called "holy scriptures" like here in American where you have something like 30,000 different denominations of Christianity.... And they would have to admit that those barbaric thugs in Moses' time might've had a more compassionate moral compass(in which I find to be inferior to secular morality) then them 2000 years later.

Unfortunately it can be done Gary, look at North Korea. If you know your family will be executed if you practice religion, chances are you'll become an atheist very quickly.

You are so right. I am a disabled vietnam era vet and i was at the VA hospital a few weeks ago and was in the little store they have looking at vietnam veteran hat cause mine is getting old. I started to the check out and all of a sudden noticed the tag in the hat it said "made in china". I promptly droped the hat in the floor and walked out cussing. The manage walked out behind me to ask what the problem was and i informed him in a rather loud voice "i buy american not chinese crap. Also i haven't been in a wal-mart in over 10 years and don't intend to start any time soon........the end.

The issue is not about religion. The issue is about freedom. Freedom to choose. Freedom to think for oneself. This is what scares the leaders in China. Their form of government and way of living will be history if the people are allowed to be free.

There are really nothing wrong with believing in God or being an atheist. What is wrong is when a government or a society forces you to assimilate with their beliefs and suffer harsh or violent consequences if you dont comply.

That's what I love about the U.S. - it's okay to believe in a god or not to. I'm an atheist all the way, but I respect people's right to believe in whatever they want. Too bad China hasn't figured that out yet.

Chinese cittizens put their life on the line just for BELIEVING in God, but here we Americans are suing over whether or not Nativity scenes should be allowed in public spaces. Unbelieveable. We are so spoiled in this country. If all the people who want to "fundamentally transform" the US had to spend even a single day living under Communist/Socialist rule, they would #$%$ their over-priviledged pants.
