    China protest village readies for local elections

    BEIJING (AP) — A village in southern China where mass protests over land disputes drove out local officials and police has begun preparing for elections to replace the ousted leaders.

    December's protests in Wukan village ended after provincial officials intervened and gave in to the protesters' key demands. It was a rare compromise by the Chinese government, which often suppresses protests.

    Yang Semao, a deputy head of the village's election preparation panel, says around 60 percent of the village's 7,600 residents participated in a vote Wednesday to select the members of an 11-member election committee.

    Yang says the committee will organize the election for new village leaders, which will take place around March 1.

      Good for them. These guys got results. No the elections ain't new but the crooked election committee was replaced. Oakland protesters should have it so good.

      The west media conveniently omit the fact that the oust ex-leader was also elected. The villagers asked the central government to help them and get rid of the ex-leader.

      How is this news? Villages always elect their own local reps. The big problem they had here was that the previous leader was a corrupt mobster with triad backing. Everyone knew this because it was always on Hong Kong news.

      If election is held as predicted,then it will be a historical event for China to permit a free election.Most and almost all officials are appointed by Central or provincial govts as a rule in this people's democratic state,a central controlled driven state per se.but any sham election can be manipulated by authority to make it look good as a genuine people's will or choice.
