China to publish sensitive wealth gap data

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state media say the government plans to conduct a nationwide income survey to help it calculate a politically sensitive measure of wealth inequality.

The China Daily newspaper on Tuesday quoted a National Statistics Bureau official as saying the survey will be conducted with help from Canada and the results will be published next year.

Xie Hongguang says the release of the standarized survey data will pave the way for calculating a wealth-inequality statistic known as the Gini coefficient. The statistic has been released previously for rural but not urban residents.

The government has promised hefty increases in social spending to help narrow the gap between China's poor majority and an elite who have profited from three decades of economic reform.

You really have to live in those country to really find out what it looks like having struggle so hard despite conquering all the setback (high cost of education), people still could not find the jobs. In many countries, companies looking for people graduate from the Ivy League or top Notch universities, high school, and junior high. Guess who could afford to go, not the poor people. Some people like MP just don't get it

George, I agree with the numbers. However, not all things are equal. China still operates on the "company takes care" principle like the coal mines once did in the US. Lots of individual costs are paid for by the company (housing, meals, medical, clothing). The net income is more than you realize. Not as much as in the US, but more than most people think when they hear someone is paid $4,100 per year. We are not comparing apples to apples. I grew up in rural WVa without running water or indoor plumbing. We grew and canned our own vegtables, and hunted squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, and deer for our meat. Our clothes were mostly hand-me-downs. There was no TV, computer games, or cell phones. In fact we had no phone at all. We had no air conditioning and we heated our homes with wood and coal. China is more advanced than rural WVa was in the 1950's. Our nation has become a country of spoiled brats. Everyone wants to be a manager when what we really need is a lot of workers. Be happy when you are not starving or frezing to death. Sorry for rambling.

And U.S. is borrowing money from China to survive?

There are 227 countries and territories in the world, so that means China is ranked in the upper 44 %.

And the cost of living in U.S. is 6 times of China's. So, factor in the Purchasing Power Parity, U.S. is not too far ahead.

I'd be willing to bet the final report never see the light of day. China does not allow social networks because they are afraid it is a means to have too many people connect on sensitive subjects. Any figures that are made public will be slanted towards what the government believes should the the reported numbers.
