Chord Overstreet is leaving Glee as a full-time character. Overstreet has joined the Glee cast as Sam Evans, a good-looking football player that was eventually convinced to join the choir. It had appeared that he was going to remain one of the main characters of the show until he "graduated," but that doesn't turn out to be the case.
According to Deadline, on Friday Overstreet sent out a cryptic tweet that read, "It's been a good year. Too bad it's over. Time for summer and starting fresh." That got fans of the show pretty riled up, and it caused quite a few stories about who might or might not be coming back for Glee season three. Now the confirmation has been made that Overstreet wasn't given a full-time contract for season three.
There is still the chance that Overstreet could return for episodes of the show in season three, and that he might be a supporting character for quite some time. Many shows have actors or actresses under contracts such as those, where they come in for a handful of episodes or simply have small parts compared to the series regulars. It's a bit surprising that Overstreet was relegated to this though, because he seemed like a pretty popular character amongst fans.
While it was bad news for Overstreet, it was really good news for Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr. Criss plays Blaine and Shun plays Mike, and both were upgraded to become full-time characters in season three. That should allow them to have many more scenes in the coming year, but for the actors it is also going to be a nice bump in pay. It likely means that they will have storylines focused around them more often, and that they will be in every episode next year as well.
As Glee heads into its third season there are going to be changes coming for the show. Most shows like this have the inherent problem of characters getting older and having to move on from the show. Some shows (like Beverly Hills, 90210) simply moved from high school to college and then real life. With Glee though, the central premise is a high school show choir, meaning that some kids will simply become too old to stick around. A season three graduation episode could mean that quite a few of the most liked characters could be replaced soon, and that could mean a new direction for the show.
