Chris Culliver Plans His Own Redemption

Chris Culliver's two biggest concerns right now are winning the Super Bowl and trying to recover from the media maelstrom following his homophobic comments on Media Day. After the Super Bowl, Culliver will start his attempt to redeem himself in the public eye.

The San Francisco 49er backup cornerback announced he will start sensitivity training immediately after the Super Bowl, and that he's planning to volunteer at an LGBT suicide crisis and prevention center in San Francisco. Culliver is also going to start working with The Trevor Project, an organization dedicated to helping LGBT youth.

Culliver is trying to amends for ugly comments he made during an interview on comedian Artie Lange's radio show Tuesday. "I don't do the gay guys, man," Culliver told Lange. "I don't do that. No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do." Culliver said he wouldn't welcome a gay teammate in the locker room, no matter how talented he is on the field.

There were concerns Culliver's apology that came Thursday was more a public relations exercise than a genuine admission of regret. Most notably, Culliver waited about fifteen seconds before answering whether or not he would welcome a gay teammate again. He said yes this time, but his critics say the silence said as much as he did.
