Christie says economy, gridlock menace US future

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie hasn't changed his mind: He reaffirmed in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Tuesday that he's not running for president.

Christie urged a capacity audience of about 900 to look at the website Politico, which had pieced together a long string of video clips of him saying he's not a candidate for the White House.

"Those are the answers," he told the crowd.

Christie later said he was flattered by suggestions he should run in 2012, but added, "that reason has to reside inside me."

Nonetheless, the speech — delivered at a shrine to America's 40th president, with former first lady Nancy Reagan in the audience — was likely to stoke fresh speculation about his presidential ambitions.

The Republican governor warned that the nation's credibility abroad was being damaged by troubles at home. He charged that an indecisive White House has deepened the nation's economic pain, and he accused President Barack Obama of preparing to divide the country to win re-election next year.

Christie didn't spare Congress: In a scathing indictment of Beltway politics, he said the failure to compromise, along with Obama's lack of leadership, had set the country dangerously off course.

In Washington "we drift from conflict to conflict, with little or no resolution. We watch a president who once talked about the courage of his convictions, but still has yet found the courage to lead," Christie said.

"We watch a Congress at war with itself because they are unwilling to leave campaign-style politics at the Capitol's door. The result is a debt-ceiling limitation debate that made our democracy appear as if we could no longer effectively govern ourselves," he said.

Christie's appearance came during a three-day national trip in which the governor is raising money for Republicans and networking with party rainmakers.

With a reputation as a blunt-talking budget-cutter, the Reagan stage gave Christie the opportunity to extend his influence in a party that views him as a rising star. His remarks could stoke a fresh round of speculation about his White House ambitions, but his brother was the latest confidante to tamp down talk of a presidential bid.

"I'm sure that he's not going to run," Todd Christie told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. The newspaper also reported that the governor told wealthy donors earlier Tuesday in Santa Ana that he was not entering the race, echoing his previous statements.

Christie, the first Republican elected New Jersey governor since 1997, repeatedly contrasted Reagan's leadership skills with the dysfunction in Washington. Obama has positioned himself as a compromiser and deal-maker, but Christie cited his work in Trenton as the successful model, saying "leadership and compromise is the only way you reform New Jersey's pension and health benefits system."

He mocked Obama as "a bystander in the Oval Office" who was preparing to divide the nation along economic lines to win another four years in Washington, apparently alluding to the president's jobs bill, which proposes that wealthy Americans and big corporations pay more in taxes.

Obama is "telling those who are scared and struggling that the only way their lives can get better is to diminish the success of others," Christie said. He's "insisting that we must tax and take and demonize those who have already achieved the American Dream."

After the speech, Christie was asked repeatedly during a question-and-answer session if he would reconsider a presidential run. He declined, as he has many times before.

Lantie Jorandby, a 38-year-old physician from Florida who watched the speech, said she was unhappy with the GOP field and was eager to see Christie in the race. The registered Republican lamented the GOP presidential debates, calling them "a playground."

Mitt "Romney seems like a used car salesman. (Rick) Perry is out of his depth," she said. Christie "kind of has that Reagan-esque vibe."

Politicians should be required to wear uniforms like NASCAR drivers - so that we would know who "their" corporate sponsors are.

There is something to that. In the past when this country faced a crisis, we may not have agreed completely on the details of how to get past it but we certainly united together under one flag, committed to overcoming our challenge.

We are not enemies. Republicans, Democrats, liberals and conservatives. We all want this to be a great country again that we can be proud of, we just have different ideas of how to get there. It is our differences that make us strong because it gives us a range of options and possibilities. The constructive conflict that comes from divergent opinions must be embraced so that we can follow the path of the best ideas and discard the questionable ones, but we must be willing to be open minded, rational, reasonable and able to compromise for the greater good. Until this happens, I fear our country will continue its downward slide.

Ruzzi did the typical tp thing and make a big deal about obamacare..
I'm betting he doesn't know much about the package. Fair enough? Okay Ruzzi....
It cost too much... burdens tax payers... so tell us what the CBO cost estimates of Obama Care are.
It is hurting Americans...okay... so tell us ten things that are included in the Obama care plan.
It is like socialism... okay again... Ruzzi... tell us what the difference between the government forcing business owners buy Employers Liability insurance, forcing home owners to buy earth quake insurance, forcing you and I to pay for our drivers license... and "Obama Care" SSN? Medicare? Pharmacuetical bill???

Ignoring the CBO findings because they were favorable to President OBama... and sticking to the TP line... does not make you an expert on "obama care"....

I am anxiously awaiting the day of reckoning when the American people become wise enough to put away the politics and the shell game played by both party's and speak with one loud clear voice the they are of one party the American party and that is what the politicians will be judged by. Job Performance, Honesty, and there will be accountability. In that day special interest will no longer control our government and the shell game of hide the truth will end and prosperity and fairness and honor will return to America. I have a dream...

what global leadership? our corporate and economic leaders are 100% focused on how to make money on the rise of china, which will be the world's #1 economy soon. you cannot have this mindset and simultaneously act in the interests of the american people

The thing that amuses me here is that so many who read this article are choosing to only see the part they want to see. His message about leadership and against the gridlock in Washington is just as much a condemnation of his fellow Republicans as it is of Obama and the Democrats. He specifically said that both side have to cease the "election politics." I am an actual resident of NJ, and will tell you that something Christie has boasted of often ist hat he has gotten things accomplished WITH the Democrats in the legislature-while it seems the right-wing likes to fantasize that he kicked the door down, throttled all of them, and left them weeping in a puddle of their own urine. He has had nothing but praise for prominent Democrats in our area like Cory Booker of Newark or Andrew Cuomo in NY. He also strongly condemned Eric Cantor when he threatened to hold up relief funds without budget cuts in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene; Christie said outright "People are suffering now, work the budget out later." I was especially impressed that he shrugged it off when Stephen Sweeney, president of the NJ senate, called him some less than flattering names after tense negotiations over pension reform. He has even come to Sweeney's defense more than once when he is attacked by the local elements of the right or left wing press. He even has praise for some of Obama's agenda, and Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity. His example of taking the ideological, party-line blinders off should be emulated by Democrats AND Republicans. But that would mean either side have to acknowledge that sometimes they are wrong, and sometimes they will not get what they want.

Does anyone else think that Chris Christie looks like Peter Griffin from Family Guy?

Chris Christie knows that God himself, can't fix this country alone. No matter who becomes President won't have a chance in hell, unless all the people of this country get behind him/her and make it work. Remember the story about the twigs and the bundle? Folks, lets bundle again and show the world how strong we can be.

Even Christie knows whomever the next president is won't be able to fix the economic mess we are in. The economy is too screwed up for any political party or economic philosophy to fix.

Christie knows that running for President would expose 2 things about him. 1. He is a thin skinned bully whose wisdom can not be questioned. 2. Despite 100s of milions in tax cuts and budget cuts the economy in NJ is actually slightly worse than when he took office.

Christie couldn't run even if you held a pork chop in front of him. The best he can manage is a zombie-like amble, but at that pace he risks soiling himself.

I think everyone agrees the economy, and political gridlock are key issues that need to be addressed . The question is how do we solve these problems with the least pain and suffering on the part of average Americans .

      Chris Christie:

      - Did NOT sue the feds over Obamacare
      - Has not pushed meaningful property tax reform
      - Has increased state spending
      - Has pushed an anti-jobs environmental agenda
      - Just increased Port Authority tolls by 87.5%, with a 50% hike taking place shortly after he approved it

Don't forget that the same media that is praising Christie incessantly was the same media that carried Obama to the White House in 2008. They are in the process of trying to recruit a liberal Republican that will alienate conservatives and guarantee their man another term. First they shoved Romney down our throats, and now it's Christie. Don't make the mistake of allowing the media to pick the candidates again. Research them all on your own, and vote based on merits and accomplishments rather than a whole lot of empty hype.

Why is it that in this country it is easier for a canidate to run for plublic office and get paid a huge salary and be placed in a leadership role then it is for a working class blue collar to pass the interveiw process? should we as voter be just as demanding and picky? why aren't we ?
