'Chronicle' edges Radcliffe's 'Woman' with $22M

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some unknown kids with superpowers have nudged out the world's most famous teen wizard at the weekend box office.

The 20th Century Fox release "Chronicle," featuring a relatively unknown cast as youths who gain telekinetic abilities, debuted as the No. 1 movie with $22 million.

Sunday studio estimates put "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe's ghost story "The Woman in Black," released by CBS Films, just behind with a $21 million opening.

The results were close enough that the No. 1 and 2 rankings could switch when final numbers are released Monday.

The two movies had healthy starts considering it was Super Bowl weekend, when few people go to theaters on Sunday because of the big game.

Each movie landed in the all-time top-10 list for Super Bowl weekend debuts, which is headed by the $31.1 million opening for 2008's "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert," according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"To have two movies over $20 million on a Super Bowl weekend is really strong," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "If the Super Bowl is as close as these two movies, that'll be a really good Super Bowl."

Both movies packed in solid teen and early-20s crowds, Hollywood's bread-and-butter audience that had been giving movies a pass during a box-office slide late last year.

"Chronicle" was "designed and made for a younger demographic. That demographic has been the one that's been missing from theaters," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox. "There's something very unique and very innovative about this movie that they got wind of. There was a lot of pre-release chatter on social media that made a connection with this audience."

From first-time director Josh Trank, "Chronicle" relies on documentary-style, hand-held filming techniques to tell the story of three teens (Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan and Alex Russell) who put their newfound superpowers to work in mischievous and eventually dark ways.

"Chronicle" added $13 million overseas for a worldwide total of $35 million.

In "The Woman in Black," his first starring role since last summer's "Harry Potter" finale, Radcliffe plays a widowed lawyer beset by ghostly apparitions at the remote home of a recently deceased client.

While the audience for "Chronicle" was 55 percent male, the crowds for "Woman in Black" were 59 percent female, drawn by heartthrob Radcliffe and the lure of an old-fashioned Gothic ghost story.

Both films far exceeded industry expectations for the weekend.

"In retrospect, you look at Daniel Radcliffe, one of the biggest stars and one of the hardest-working kids in show business, you have a very well-made PG-13 scary movie," said Steven Friedlander, head of distribution for CBS Films. "The only surprise, really, is why are we surprised? Those are all the elements for making a hit."

The previous weekend's top movie, Liam Neeson's Alaska survival tale "The Grey," slipped to No. 3 with $9.5 million, raising its domestic total to $34.6 million.

At No. 4 with an $8.5 million debut was another Alaska adventure, Universal Pictures' family film "Big Miracle," with Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski aiming to save three whales trapped by Arctic ice.

Pop star Madonna's drama "W.E." had a modest opening in limited release, pulling in $45,000 in four theaters. Directed and co-written by Madonna, "W.E." blends the real-life romance of Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and Britain's King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) with a fictional modern story of a Manhattan woman (Abbie Cornish) in an unhappy marriage.

Hollywood finished the first month of 2012 with strong revenues that are running well ahead of last year's lackluster receipts. According to Hollywood.com, domestic revenues through Sunday totaled $967.5 million, up 14 percent from the same point last year.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

    1. "Chronicle," $22 million ($13 million international).

    2. "The Woman in Black," $21 million.

    3. "The Grey," $9.5 million ($1.4 million international).

    4. "Big Miracle," $8.5 million ($300,000 international).

    5. "Underworld Awakening," $5.6 million ($11.9 million international).

    6. "One for the Money," $5.3 million.

    7. "Red Tails," $5 million.

    8. "The Descendants," $4.6 million ($11.2 million international).

    9. "Man on a Ledge," $4.5 million ($6.2 million international).

    10. "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," $3.9 million.

    ___

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

    1. "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," $25.8 million.

    2. "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," $14.1 million.

    3. "Chronicle," $13 million.

    4. "Underworld Awakening," $11.9 million.

    5. "The Descendants," $11.2 million.

    6. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," $9.3 million.

    7. "Jack and Jill," $8 million.

    8. "Man on a Ledge," $6.2 million.

    9. "Puss in Boots," $5.3 million.

    10. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," $4.4 million.

Saw the Woman in Black yesterday. It was really good. An old fashioned scary story that was actually scary. Not gross, actually scary. Movie makers today seem to think they mean the same thing. Christopher Lee was right, It's what you don't see in the dark that is scary.

Well said, am so tired of movies using gore in place of good scary storytelling.

I saw The Woman in Black yesterday and enjoyed it. It's a refreshing, old-fashioned haunting that doesn't need vampires, wolves or mutilation. Daniel did a fine job and I wish him much success in the future.

It seems to me that the strong showing of movie-goers over "Superbowl Weekend" might have less to do with the great quality of films, but the poor quality of Superbowl.

Moreover, the Superbowl is only played on Sunday, which means normal households just do their regular Friday and Saturday things. If you live in a household where the entire weekend is given over to festivities celebrating this particular sporting event to the exclusion of everything else, then I tend to think that issues other than "fandom" are involved...

Fox always overestimates its movies on Sunday. On Monday we'll see that the Daniel Radcliff movie has actually won. People should have caught on to the way Fox operates by now.

The studios are looking for ANY 'book to screen' adaptations which will rake in teh cash and repeat customers like LOTR and Harry Potter did. They throw enough darts and one might eventually stick.

Yeah i know! It's like they have nothing original anymore that's actually good!

Saw 'Woman In Black' today and it was good. I'd buy it when it comes out on dvd. It's not scary, it's more thriller/suspense. I enjoyed it!

"nudged out the world's most famous teen wizard"....this aint Chronicle vs Harry Potter.....he's not a wizard in this movie, we need new editors who really know what their talking about.

Isn't it sickening how the world has gotten so greedy and money-centric that a film is singled out for how much money it pulls in at the box office rather than how good it is. And taking a look at what's topping the charts, it's no wonder that they're all action-packed, CG laden, with pretty faces here and there and everywhere without any depth, story, or inspiring plots, real life characters, etc. because there's no damned money in it. What ever happened to art?

Yes, its very unfortunate. People turn their noses at great flicks like Pan's Labyrinth, but will instantly scream "greatest movie ever" as soon as a new Transformers movie comes out. I'd have to blame it on the decreasing intelligence of our country. No one wants to have to think during a movie. They just want to see explosions and pretty CGI. Their humor has also been stupified. Movies like Meet the Spartans and Date Movie are hits only because of the increasingly dumber, newer generations. I'll take Seven Samurai over any new flick any day.

OR...maybe some people just get bored of movies that don't have a lot of action going on. It takes a lot more to make a good action movie than it does a drama. There are a lot of people that do the work on special effects lighting, and all that in a big movie like transformers and all you fools can say is that it's no good and only the unitellectuals dig it??? The truth is, everyone is not the same. I liked pans labrynth and transformers, but I will say transformers was a much better movie. Pans labrynth was good because it was different, but that about the only thing that made it good.

Chronicle was good, especially once the kid learned how to hold the camera with his powers

      Enough super hero movies already!
      • BillsXLVII 3 mths ago
This isn't a comic book movie...
      • Cedrina 3 mths ago
        Nor are they super heroes.

Chronicle was a joke, like most of those cheesy wannabe superhero type movies - best parts are in commercials - stay home or download the torrent for free on that p.o.s.
    • Tyler  •  3 mths ago
Was chronicle good? I didn't see it because i had a feeling the bad guy was going to be an annoying brat the whole movie and didn't want to waste money.

I hate the misleading first sentence! I came here from Yahoo! Mail and this is what we see:

"Some unknown kids with superpowers have nudged out the world's most famous teen wizard at the weekend box office."

This misleads us into thinking that it actually beat Harry Potter and tricks us into reading the article. -_-

moral of this story, magic beats magic.
    • Robert  •  3 mths ago
Chronical was excellent, great story and acting, not taking itself to seriously. A great breakout for new young actors and a big improvment in the hand held camera perspective. But i still want to see The woman in black both movies look much better than whats coming out soon and happy the reviews were good for both movies.
