CIA officers mark death of spy with rare request

WASHINGTON (AP) — CIA officers are asking people to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of the first American killed in the Afghan war by donating to help the children of their fellow fallen.

Since the death in 2001 of CIA officer Mike Spann, a total of 23 stars have been added to the wall at the CIA's Langley, Va., headquarters that honors CIA operatives lost. Many were killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The clandestine world rarely breaks its silence, especially when it comes to family, but the CIA Officers Memorial Foundation notes about 56 children of those killed in the line of duty will need educational support over the next 17 years.

Spann was part of a small group of CIA paramilitary officers who went into Afghanistan just 16 days after the al-Qaida attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Less than two months later, the CIA along with U.S. Special Forces Green Berets and a massive aerial bombing campaign helped Afghan militias drive out the ruling Taliban.

Spann was killed when hundreds of Taliban and al-Qaida prisoners, guarded by just a handful of Afghans, tried to escape from a fortress jail in Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.

Spann is survived by his wife, Shannon, a retired CIA officer, and three children.

I say we need a revolution in America. we need to clear out congress and put in people that acutally care about human beings instead of money
      • Whitey 6 mths ago
Problem with that is the same CIA personnel asking for donations would be trying to take us out .
      • Rrrrrrrrr 6 mths ago
Republican or Democratic - Its a 2 party game and 3rd party candidates rarely gather enough momentum to score. And if they did, don't you know that dem or rep converts would jump ship in their own party if they saw personal advantage to move.
Here's a place to start: Vote- Everyone needs to Vote-
      • Nicholas 6 mths ago
According to the constitution we should do this... So, why don't we?
    • Dr. b  •  6 mths ago
You would think that the Central Intelligence Agency(considered such a high risk job), would have thought of having a fund for survivors of personel that died in the line of duty.
      • Smee 6 mths ago
They probably wouldn't be able to afford the premiums.
      • Jerry 6 mths ago
Yeah there is no way anyone convince me that he did not have a life insurance policy.
      • Freeman1776 6 mths ago
there you go Dr. B, you got it exactly right.............any risky vocation requires lots of insurance which will cover the family of the insured as well as the insured. You'd think with the billions used to fun clandestine ops, these CIA folks would get a nice pension on retirement or a nice compensation package if they are killed.

I am shocked that the CIA has their hand out to us who have been paying and paying since the Korean War and there seems no end to the CIA's financial needs.

Let the Rockefellers pay, let the very wealthy Bush family pay, and let the equally wealthy Dick Cheney pay for those HE helped send to their death. There must be come accountability by these folks who order the CIA ops into a dangerous zone.

Why do the Rockefellers, Bush's, and Cheney's get to sit it out and watch from the sidelines while WE, the taxpayers, are once again asked to pay while the rich folks just watch????

does this mean we have officially declared war on Afghanistan?? I am still uncertain
      • WIlliam Wallace 6 mths ago
ROFL .... Yes, I believe that is the message of our deranged Government.
      • William 6 mths ago
No-- because if we did all those Gitmo prisoners that you liberal types seem to have so sympathetic about could have been shot without a trial for carrying weapons in a declared combat zone without a uniforms and we would be perfectly whithin our rights according to both the Geneva and Hague conventions.
    • scar  •  6 mths ago
His family should have been taken care by the government......... why is the CIA soliciting donations from the tax payers?
      • Andrew - 6 mths ago
where do you think the U.S. govt get's it's money?
      • Freeman1776 6 mths ago
Its not enough that they are chocking us with taxes and threatening cutting services, but now we also have to fork up more money for someone's children? The government gets BILLION$ if not more from us, let the congressman and senators who vote each year for their raises and pensions pay for those CIA children. We have OUR own children to feed now that they have spent our money on hundreds of CIA adventures all over the world. We the taxpayers are starting to be broke, time for the CIA to go begging from their rich benefactors who sent them on their adventures to topple governments to the American elite can make a financial killing off the backs of people in South America and other parts of the world..

CIA, go with your tin can to George Bush senior, he has always supported you and had your best interests in mind. He is the one whom, you sold drugs for in the 1980's, now maybe he'll part with some of that money and help your families.

So not sending a VOLUNTARY contribution is somehow tax extortion? How does asking for VOLUNTARY aid to the kids, hurt you?

How about Haliburton kicking in some cash? They've made billions in war profits in the middle east. Their profits have seen an increase of 243% over the last 8 years.
      • Teacher John 6 mths ago
How about if Haliburton was made to be a decent corporation and not rape anything that comes in its path? The mindset of any corporation that just takes and feels above the law is what is EVIL,
      • Chiron8839 6 mths ago
My initial thoughts exactly. For that matter, let Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz and the others who dragged us unnecessarily into Iraq chip in. They've got enough to support hundreds of orphaned children.
      • FILBERT IN MISSISSIPPI 6 mths ago
Cheney PERSONALLY profited a billion off this Zionist planned Conspiracy that killed 3000 downtown & 4500 in Afghanistan. In addition 38,000 U.S. proud servicemen lost their legs & balls for the "jewish state." Mike Span was a Hero
nonetheless, but Haliburton should be Forced Closed, assets forcibly SOLD & all
those profits should be in a trust that REPAYS all those wounded or killed's
children & relatives!!! Tea party? the h-bomb to you unpatriotic, duped, stooges for supporting this Republican-backed Reign of Terror
        and worldwide fear campaign.

Stop sending money to foriegn countries and pay these people.I lost 2 nephews in Afgahnistan and no one is paying their kids education either 2 of those kids never met their fathers but yet we can send money to Jordan every year to leave Israel alone something like $400 million should that not be Israels responsibility to take care of themselves by whatever means not our tax dollars to pay someone else off to not harm them
    • Dr. b  •  6 mths ago
Doesn´t Government have an existing fund like, "killed in the line of duty benefits" for survivors, similar to the military?
    • michaelc  •  6 mths ago
A really good spy is never known. They live, perform their job and eventually die, all without fanfare. Truly undercover !
    • tom  •  Richardson, United States  •  6 mths ago
If we are going to be asked for funds for CIA personnel, how about funds for fallen U S soldiers children. An army PFC is paid a hell of a lot less than a CIA operative.
    • purr  •  6 mths ago
CIA spies / agents are NEVER outed by the agency during the time of their service, and even AFTER their death.... Plus, people who work for CIA and such get paid VERY LARGE income, with ALL the benefits a regular american can just dream of.
If they are stationed in foreign countries, they WORK for one of these "dummy" corporations and companies , established long time ago. They live there as ex-pats.
Tax-Free income, with FREE housing, and company CAR and driver........

they get LOTS of benefits, and one of them includes, HEFTY life insurance policies........

every parent CANNOT afford to send their kid to college, that's why, they have the PELL GRANT . . . tell their kids to go to local community college for first two years, and if they SMART enough, they will ACE all their subjects, and qualify for Scholarships, and additional PELL GRANT , until they get their Bachelor's...........

other parents , WHO are alive, don't get any help for their kids' education........ why should a child of a spy / cia agent get benefits only because they lost a parent....
they are the same as any other kid in USA, who wants an education.................

other kids' parents are working their Arse off to make ends meet.....

what are we trying to say that if this agent was ALIVE, he would have been able to afford to send his kid to college? well, let's suppose, he worked for 10 more years, and made a million dollars.......... that's the same amount of money, the family collect from insurance policies...........

plus, if he was smart enough, he had already created a trust fund, and put in money from the start.........

also, if thigs get that bad, what is the gov't doing? it's the govt's responsibility.....

cut the pay for the big wigs at CIA and put that into an educational fund.......

if poor kids have to survive, without a 'foundation' or 'fund', so do the rich ones........

isn't the deceased spouse working at all? many, and i emphasize again, many single parents are out there, struggling and working hard to make sure their kids make it through colleges / universities........ they don't have a foundation or special fund helpiing them out............

and many of them earn less than 50k per year............ not the HUGE salaries of a CIA spy / agent - TAX FREE.............

The U.S. government should guarantee the educaion of these left behind children. Cut a few of the expense accounts that are sqandered on lobbyists.

So if a CIA agent is killed in the line of duty, our Government does not take care of their family?? This story is wack!!
    • Yahoo User  •  6 mths ago
How Sad that our congress willingly sends $10,000,000,000 (10 billion) per year to Israel as an annual reoccurring gift yet the CIA has to go out begging to take care of the 57 Children of fallen officers. less than 1% of the annual gift will take care of these Children till adulthood even if they choose the most expensive private colleges

Which country is our congress working for?

Why is it when a government employee is killed in the line of duty, someone wants us to provide funding for their children for their educations???? I would think all CIA officers would have an insurance policy that would help their families, and being his wife is a retired CIA officer as well. The USA government employees make a a lot more money then most people would expect.

What about the children who parents don't work for the US government who die, why isn;t anyone asking for their education to be paid for. They are no different then the CIA officers who chose that line of work, knowing the dangers they could face.

It seems we only want to help government employees, like this CIA officer, policemen, firemen, US military, but what about the teacher, plumbers, constructions, retailer workers, cooks, waiters, trash men, bank tellers, bus drivers, and so on. They are hard working people, more so then the government employees.

Being a Vet of the 1st gulf war, I feel I have the right to speak out on this matter.
