It’s Up To Citizens To End Violence Against Women And Children – Zuma

Cabinet Shuffle – April Fool’s prank or just bad timing?

The scourge of violence against women and children continues despite the country having the right policies and legal framework to protect them,” said President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday.

Speaking from Reiger Park, Johannesburg, at the official launch of the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children, Zuma said the responsibility lay with the citizens to implement the Constitution.

“In this regard, this country has the right policies and legal framework to protect women and children,” said Zuma. “Despite this, the scourge of violence against women and children continues.”

“Twenty years into democracy, let us today make a commitment to work together harder than before, to make South Africa a society free of violence against women and children,” he added.

The president said this year’s campaign was aimed at men and boys.

“We encourage greater participation, we urge young men and boys to become activists against gender-based violence,” he said.

Reiger Park has been the target of many violent crimes against children this year. Recently three-year-old Cuburne Lavone van Wyk’s burned body was found at a mine dump in Ramaphosa, Reiger Park.

In another controversial case, Four-year-old Taegrin Morris from Delmore Gardens, near Reiger Park, died after being dragged behind his parents’ hijacked car. The only suspect in the case was released due to lack of evidence earlier in November.
