CLAYSVILLE — A garage used by the owner to work on vehicles at a Claysville Road property was destroyed by fire Wednesday.

"There was no clear or obvious cause," said New Concord Fire Chief Matt Hamsher. "It is a total loss and, as of now, the cause remains undetermined."

Crews from the New Concord and Cassell Station fire departments were dispatched to extinguish the flames just after 6 p.m.

The initial 911 caller reported several vehicles were believed to be inside the garage, but Hamsher confirmed only one vehicle and numerous vehicle parts, including a recently rebuilt motor, were inside the garage at the time of the fire.

"The garage was fully involved and flames were venting out the garage door when we arrived," said Hamsher. "There was a partial collapse of the roof when additional crews were arriving. We hit the fire with a couple hose lines and was able to get it under control."

A dispatch log at the Guernsey County Sheriff's Office said fire crews reported the 20x40-foot detached garage was fully involved at 6:14 p.m. and the partial roof collapse occurred six minutes later.

The fire was reported to be under control at 6:53 p.m. with firefighters still extinguishing hot spots.

The New Concord and Cassell Station crews cleared the scene at 7:43 p.m.

"No injuries were reported by the owner or fire crews," Hamsher said.

No damage estimate was available as of Thursday morning.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
