McAllister was the company's lead director and has been on the board since 1996. McAllister retired as CEO of Stillwater Mining Co. on Friday.

Cliffs said it elected James Kirsch as its new lead director, and he will take that position at the company's annual meeting in July. Kirsch has been on the Cliffs board since 2010. He is the former chairman, president and CEO of specialty chemicals maker Ferro Corp.
