Clint Eastwood’s Chrysler commercial viewed as Obama campaign ad [VIDEO]

What appeared to be a simple, patriotic commercial during the halftime of the Super Bowl has turned into a political football between the right and left.

Clint Eastwood starred in a two-minute Chrysler commercial which suggested that it was “halftime in America,” and that the second half would be a better one for the country. The commercial had political undertones that did not go unnoticed. The Hollywood Reporter wrote:

The Super Bowl is televised advertising’s equivalent of the Cannes Film Festival, so White House political strategists must have been smiling when what’s generally being hailed as this year’s best spot — the Chrysler “Halftime in America” commercial — subtly echoed the themes of President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign.

The commercial concedes that the past few years have been rough for Detroit, the auto industry and the country, but that we can pull together, like Detroit did. ”They almost lost everything,” Eastwood says. “But we all pulled together. Now Motor City is fighting again.”

It’s hard to ignore the nod to the 2010 bailout, when the Obama administration loaned $60 billion to auto companies to pull them out of bankruptcy.

The commercial finishes with some fighting words in Eastwood’s signature gruff voice: “This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines.”

To some, the commercial was viewed as a very good campaign ad for Obama — the “halftime” being the 2012 election, before a second term as president.

Top Democrats applauded the commercial during the game on Twitter.

David Axelrod, senior policy advisor to President Obama, tweeted: “Powerful spot. Did Clint shoot that, or just narrate it?”

Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore tweeted:  ”And Clint, the consensus is u done a good thing standing up 4 Detroit–& your sermon seemed 2 b a call 2 give O his “second half.” #sellcars

But conservatives were less than thrilled by the commercial. On Fox News Monday, Karl Rove stated that he was “offended” by the ad:

I’m a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, I thought it was an extremely well-done ad, but it is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising.

The commercial is seemingly contradictory to Eastwood’s rightward-leaning views. As a self-proclaimed fiscal conservative and social liberal, the actor told the LA Times last year:

“I’ve always been very liberal when it comes to people thinking for themselves. But I’m a big hawk on cutting the deficit. I was against the stimulus thing too. We shouldn’t be bailing out the banks and car companies. If a CEO can’t figure out how to make his company profitable, then he shouldn’t be the CEO.”

Eastwood also said that he has been disillusioned with the Republican Party over the past few years. He told GQ last year: “[O]ver the years, I realized there was a Republican philosophy that I liked. And then they lost it. And libertarians had more of it.”

      • Bob c 3 mths ago
I agree, Howard. Our fellow conservatives are doing us all a great disservice by trying to make it seem otherwise. Very sad.

It is fun to watch how sensitive the Republicans are to anything that might make their ultra-rich policies look bad.

It really does not matter if they buy lots of corrupt lying ads but if there is just a tinge of someone else doing what they are doing they get upset and start to whine like the spoiled children ultra-rich children they are.

President Obama, and Clint Eastwood are on the same page, and there isn't anything wrong with that. Unlike the unpatriotic haters in America, they are overjoyed about the comeback of the American automobile industry. Only a loser would see things differently.

In Novembers mail add, Chrysler offered 300 owners a Trade In value of $10,000 off the list of there car when they purchased it new If you would by a new 300 for list. My 300 is a 2007 worth $19,500 at best and there offer worked out to be $30,000. I only paid $32,500 for it new, $7,500 off list. Now in January the new offer is for $10,000 off a $40,000 300, Jeep or SUV, all shown in the background of the commercial. The top of the line cars are where the profits at. Theres No Profit Left. There just moving cars and money around until it all blows up again in 2013

When the US auto manufacturing industry was going south leaving potentially hundreds of thousands of American workers jobless, Obama, as president, had to do something to stop the blood bath. Against the violent objections by the Republicans, Obama decided he had to save the auto industry and those thousands of workers.

Now the economy along with the auto industry are turning the corner, those auto companies are making billions in profits and are paying back the loans they took. All this is supposedly good news for America. However, leave it up to the Republicans, any good news to the country is bad news to them. Hence, they waste no time in killing that message.

Their view, God forbids the US is back on track and hiring again. That's bad. Real bad. The GOP prefers the country fails, our people live in shame, our economy in the gutter so they can claim victory. Mitch McConnell was not shy in revealing the GOP's grand strategy. If the country fails, the GOP hopes to take back the White House so they can implement the same strategies and ideas that got us in this great debacle in the first place.

To the GOP - Americans are coming back to work is a good thing. Our economy improving is a good thing. Our people live in dignity is a good thing. Our parents who can help send our kids to school is a good thing. These are not bad for America Republicans.

Reagan would be turning in his grave at the republican party today. He ran no negative ads when running for president & raised the taxes on the very rich.
      • Roger 3 mths ago
Yes he would be turning at all the Americans obama has put on food stamps
    • J G  •  3 mths ago
What a joke. Chrysler is 58% owned by Fiat. Not an American company!
    • Who?  •  Tampa, Florida  •  3 mths ago
Clint Eastwood is a republican why would he do anything for Obama. Look it up
    • Alex  •  Pasadena, California  •  3 mths ago
He told GQ last year: “[O]ver the years, I realized there was a Republican philosophy that I liked. And then they lost it. And libertarians had more of it.”

Count me in as one of those Republicans who are disappointed with the current GOP leadership. In some instances, they have become a party of "no", whose sole target is to first get rid of Obama and then worry about help fixing this country. In the meantime, so many americans are suffering. We need to wake up and kick all of these republicans out and replaced them with the right ones. Country over party......GO USA!

Great ad and I think most Americans got the message - then there's always the vocal few that are simply a--holes and do not understand what makes this country truly great. Folks - we've got to be smarter than the politicians and put into office those that put country before political ambition.

I feel like telling President Obama.............."Well are YOU feeling LUCKY?........ PUNK"

Please note that the financial Bail-out for the factories and support for the union jobs was a "BIPARTISAN" effort actually started by President Bush and passed laterally to President Obama as he came into office. Back in the day when politicians actually worked together to get things done for the people.....not like the corrupt Democrat controlled senate with their obstructionist politics.

The secret to winning hearts and minds is to stop making and selling junk. Really simple. So simple it took the Japanese to show Detroit how to proceed.

"Do you feel lucky, Obama...Well do ya???"
    • David Frost  •  3 mths ago
The reason why the Republicans don't like the ad is it shows that the US is turning a corner, getting better, and that's exactly what they don't want in an election year. The Republicans are willing and able to sabotage the entire US economy just to get their way in November. They don't like messages of hope, they live off of messages of fear.
