Clinton Road, New Jersey: The most terrifying road in the U.S.

FIRST PERSON | About seven years ago, my cousin Julie and her husband Mark moved back to New Jersey from South Carolina. After months of searching, they found a great house in West Milford, New Jersey. Julie, who I grew up with, called me and asked me to meet them at the house and let them know my opinion.

After checking out a map online, I saw the home was on a street just off Clinton Road north of Route 23. I drove up Green Pond Road, got onto Route 23, and then turned right onto Clinton Road. Almost immediately, I noticed that Clinton Road was different from almost all the roads in New Jersey.

There were no homes along the road and no connecting roads. Clinton Road was very curvy and kept winding around between different bodies of water. At one point, I saw what looked like shack off to the right along a dirt driveway, and later on, I saw an old kiln by the road. But other than that, there was nothing along Clinton Road. Isolation was the word that came to my mind.

[Your story: Sign up to tell your experiences with local myths.]

After about 10 miles, I reached the street off Clinton Road where the house was. The house was great, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a finished basement. It was perfect for Julie, Mark, and their kids. While looking at the house, I mentioned how creepy Clinton Road was. Julie's realtor shot me a look and looked like she wanted say something not particularly nice to me, but she said nothing.

On the way home, I went down Clinton Road just as it was getting dark. I had not gone more than a couple miles down the road when headlights appeared out of nowhere behind me. The headlights came right up behind me and then backed off. I was not in a hurry, so I slowed down and put my blinker on to let the vehicle pass, but the headlights also slowed. The headlights kept following me until I got near Route 23, and then suddenly, the headlights disappeared.

A few weeks later, Julie invited me and another cousin of ours, Mike, back to the house. They had made an offer on the property, and it was accepted, so they were having a little party one night after work. Mike and I drove up Clinton Road to get to the house. Within a mile of turning onto the road, headlights again appeared out of nowhere and rushed up to us, but then backed off. I told Mike the same thing happened the first time on the road.

The headlights kept following us, and I was keeping an eye on them in the rearview mirror when Mike shouted, "Look out!" I hit the brakes and saw something like a giant white rabbit running off into the woods. Mike asked what it was, and I told him it was likely an albino deer. I had worked at the fenced-in Hercules complex in Roxbury, New Jersey, for a few years, and there was an albino deer on the grounds then. It would look like a lot of different things when it ran around at night.

As we finally approached some lights in the distance, the headlights behind us vanished as if they were never there. We went into the house and it was pretty cold, as the heat didn't work. Mike told everyone about the headlights and the creature that ran in front of us on Clinton Road. One of the neighbors Julie and Mark had met and invited over, John, came over at the mention of Clinton Road.

"Clinton Road," he said, "is the most haunted road in America." John told us he had lived in West Milford his whole life and that Clinton Road was to be avoided at all costs. He told us a frozen dead body had been found along the road a few years ago. Clinton Road was where the mob dumped their dead bodies. He said that Satan worshipers would also gather along the road and then row out to an island in the middle of one of the lakes and perform satanic rituals.

He also said that strange creatures lived along Clinton Road. They were the result of interbreeding between the local animals and the wild animals that escaped from Jungle Habitat, which was a wild animal amusement park located in West Milford that was run by Warner Brothers in the 1970s. After Warner Brothers closed the park in late 1976, they were rumored to have let a lot of the animals just go into the local woods rather than pay to have them transported somewhere else.

He told us the headlights we had seen were from ghosts that would appear out of nowhere and follow cars along the road at night. That's why the headlights suddenly appeared and disappeared. Mike and I laughed at what the neighbor told us, but we also asked him for another road to take out of there. He told us to take Union Valley Road, which paralleled Clinton Road and was not haunted.

When I got home that night, I went on the Internet and typed in "Clinton Road" on Google. I was amazed to find that Clinton Road was pretty famous as a haunted road. The frozen dead body story was true, the result of a serial mob killer nicknamed The Iceman who used to freeze his victims before dumping them. Jungle Habitat in West Milford was also real. I found tons of stories relating how terrifying Clinton Road is online. The Travel Channel did a show about Clinton Road, calling it the most terrifying road in America. Others have made scary videos about Clinton Road and posted them on YouTube.

In the end, Julie and Mark did not buy the house in West Milford because the home inspection turned up too many problems, including the heating problem. I was relieved to hear that because I did not want to have to travel along the most terrifying road in America, Clinton Road, to see them. But for anyone out there who wants to be scared to death, Clinton Road can be reached right off Route 23 in Newfoundland, New Jersey. The road runs about 10 miles between Newfoundland and West Milford.

If you do drive along Clinton Road though, you do so at your own risk. It is just a creepy, scary, isolated road. You have been warned by someone who has been there.

We happened to take Clinton Rd Sat. April 27, 2012 from Route 23 because my GPS told us it was a more direct line to Warwick (and the Warwick Drive In) than staying on 23 North and taking 94. We were trying to make the 8:10pm show. It took me less than a mile to realize something was odd! Even our 6 year old twins were saying "daddy I'm scared - where are the houses? There aren't any other cars!" The ponds we passed were right up to the edge of the road, and we would come up from bellow them as we rose in elevation. I could see that road probably flooded if it rained heavily. There were hairpin turns that were not marked with any sign or reflective paint - I could have easily run off the road because I was trying to hasten us out of there! No car came up from behind, but we did pass two along the way. It was getting darker by the minute and we were so glad to get to the end of that road and see houses again!

That was only our second trip to Warwick NY. The first inbound trip was a journey up Route 17 and 17a last summer and I thought the ride over a mountain through the fog of dusk and some rain was too hairy with all those curves and grade changes. We went back the outbound way we went the 1st time: Route 94 all the way down through West Milford and back to Route 23, down to Route 80 East. My tires' treadlife is pretty much over. I am so so glad we didn't get a flat or have any other breakdown on Clinton Rd!

Lived here my entire 50 years...we told ghost stories as kids, but that's all they were. As for the dead bodies, sure...it's a desolate road. Good place to dump a body I guess. I have hiked this area for YEARS, never had an issue. Hung out here at "The Castle" as a teenager. We had heard the stories, but all in all, that's all they are. Ghost Stories. This is actually one of the most peaceful places I have ever hiked. :)

A few friends and I wanted to do a bunch of Weird New Jersey trips. So we took a few trips and one night we drove down Clinton Road, it was around 2 A.M. Now I live down in Central Jersey and it took about an hour to get up to West Milford (Clinton Road). I can tell you we drove down it three times that night. We got out of the car at the bridge and walked around the road trying to find something to scare us. About 45 minutes after walking around we just drove. We passed 4 cars and all 4 cars were going the other direction. It seemed like when we turned around the people we pass turned around too. But Clinton Road is not a scary road at all. I did hear about the murders upon 'The Ice Man/Ice Cream Man', heard about the boy who died near the bridge, and the famous truck driving behind you. Only thing scary about this road is that it's isolated. I have been down other roads in New Jersey that was this isolated but the only thing is they weren't 10 miles long with a bunch of turns. If you want to know the scariest road in the state of New Jersey in my eyes? That would be Split Rock Road in Hibernia. I heard the story about albino cannibal zombies over there and there are a few other things. But when we heard that, my buddies and I wanted to come face to face with these so called zombies and fight them basically. So we got a few bats and all and went there one night. And we parked off the bridge waiting for them but nothing came by. Only thing that came by was a government vehicle. When that vehicle drove on the 1 way bridge, passing 6 kids with bats and knives he got pretty scared. There was nothing there at all, but seeing that gov't vehicle did get your adrenaline rushing a bit.

Only place in the state of New Jersey where I found something on tape, and recorder was Talamini Road, Bridgewater NJ. It is when you speed around the corner a girl who died from a car accident there is supposed to appear and warn you to slow down. I did this a few times with friends and the items we got was. When I drove down it going 20mph over the speed limit, I heard a girls voice mumble something in my ear and so did my friend who was sitting behind the drivers seat. The myth says, only the drivers side can hear the girls voice. When we looked at the video view from the sidewalk, we saw a girl's apparition right when we heard the voice.

That freaked us out. So overall, Clinton Road is not the scariest road in America, it may be the most isolated road in America.

Very cool story, and I'll have to investigate it one day, along with The Jersey Devil. :D

It's well after 2 am and my girlfriend and I just got back from driving the entire stretch of Clinton Road in both directions. Aside from the two police cars we saw pulling people over (which ruined the adventure) plus the cluster of seven cars driving in the other direction, there were no vehicles behind us at any time during our sojourn. I'd bet it's rather quaint during the day but it is one desolate and creepy road at night.

When I was about 18 my friends and I decided to take a drive down Clinton Road around 11 at night.. Not my smartest move! It's very dark, very isolated, and very creepy! I definitely didn't see any ghosts or satanic cults, BUT I did have the unfortunate luck of running into a group of morons.. Knowing all the myths about the road, kids apparently like to ride around trying to scare people. We were coming up to "Dead Man's Curve" when a jeep came flying around the corner with their high beams on. We ended up slamming into the concrete divider (which I found out the next day blocked us from flying into the lake thank God!). Luckily we were able to get the car started again because the cell reception back there is almost non-existent and I can tell you there's no way I was going to walk for help on that road!!!

When was this? 2005? 2006? Because my boyfriend used to drive around with black jeep and scare ppl down that road. I just read this story to him and he told me that he chased some guys off the road once, sorry!!!
      • Shalor 7 mths ago
lol believe it or not I think it was around 2005 or 2006! what are the chances lol!! i'm just glad no one got hurt.. it really ended up being a good thing because it taught me not to do stupid things like travel down a road like that in the middle of the night!! so tell your boyfriend no big deal :)

Maggie--In case your boyfriend hasn't already done so...tell him to get a life. Who the heck has the time to waste their gas and go around scaring innocent people like that? WHO?! People like that should be arrested. Lame.

Toward the beginning of the article it states "A few weeks later, Julie invited me and another cousin of ours, Mike, back to the house. They had made an offer on the property, and it was accepted, so they were having a little party one night after work." Toward the end of the article it states "In the end, Julie and Mark did not buy the house in West Milford because the home inspection turned up too many problems, including the heating problem." So what happened? The seller let them throw a party in the house because their offer was accepted only to hav ethme back out because of home inspection issues?
      • Sandra 7 mths ago
Actually it's not backing out if your loan provider won't approve the house. Your loan provider has the last say in if you get the house or not. Unless you're paying cash. You can pretty much move in if the house is unoccupied but until you actually own it you're squatting. Agents have no problem with you having a party as long as you've made an offer on the house.
      • Melanie 7 mths ago
@Sandra- what realtors do u know? I live and have my practice in NJ. Hardly ever, usually never, does a seller let a prospective buyer enter a house and stay (unless a Use and Occupancy agreement after the Contract is firm) before the closing - certainly not to throw a party than have an inspection - what is that? Try out the goods and if you don't like it, return after use??? lol!

If you see Snookie running naked throught the woods be very afraid.
    • Steve  •  7 mths ago
The scary part is how they made an offer on the house and it was accepted so they had a party in the house before purchasing it? Then they got out of the deal after an inspection? I think the story has some continuity and credibility problems.

I don't know why, but I'm always attracted to these kinds of stories. Very interesting.

I live in Jersey in the Pine Barrens. I have driven Clinton Road and I can tell you that nothing is going on out there. There are homes for about the first four miles down the road and then it becomes desolate. It does have numerous turns and some are freaky. There is a specific point named "Dead Mans Curb" because it is about a 90 degree turn and on the concrete barricade there is a crudely drawn Star of David (Remember satanism is refered to as having a 6 point star not 5 points). We stoped at one point and shut the lights off to the car and it was just pitch black. I never saw headlights chasing me, I never saw any strange creatures and my wife is extremely sensitive to any kind of activity and nothing happened. We did have a great drive up to Clinton Road just be prepared to be disappointed.
