Closing the U.S. embassy in Syria: Will it help?

As Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces shell dissenters, Washington summons its diplomats home

On Monday, as the Syrian military unleashed an unprecedented heavy artillery bombardment on the rebel stronghold of Homs, the Obama administration closed the U.S. Embassy in Damascus. The departure of Ambassador Robert Ford and all other U.S. diplomats comes two weeks after Washington warned the government of Bashar al-Assad that the U.S. would pull out unless Syria stepped up security around the embassy, and just two two days after Russia and China vetoed a U.N. resolution condemning Assad. How will the Obama administration's decision affect its effort to compel Assad to make way for democratic reform?

It seems we're giving up on Syria: You know "a country is on the verge of collapse when the U.S. Embassy shutters its doors and gets out of Dodge," says Elise Labott at CNN. Although the U.S. isn't cutting diplomatic ties with Syria, "the move will likely be seen as a message to Syria that "we are done with you." After the departure of Ford, an outspoken critic of Assad's deadly crackdown, other countries will follow, "leaving a black hole in both independent observers to the violence and outreach to the opposition."
    "Why leave Syria"

Actually, this tightens Assad's noose: Closing the embassy amounts to a "dramatic escalation of Western pressure on President Bashar al-Assad to give up power," says Bassem Mroue for the Associated Press. It underscores Assad's growing isolation, and changes the momentum just after Russia and China gave him some breathing room at the U.N.
"U.S. closes Syrian embassy, presses Assad to go"

The administration should have done this long ago: "Perhaps we can chalk this up to 'better late than never,'" says Ed Morrissey at Hot Air. But we should never have sent Ford back to Syria after briefly calling him home last year. We have no business maintaining cordial relations with a government that is "actively opening fire on its own people" — that's why we bombed Libya.

Safe move. Ever since Tehran in 1979 embassies have become targets. No sense in leaving our people in a situation where they apparently can't do any good. We can't force democracy down their throats. Look at Egypt. Where is the democracy there?

It can't hurt (us). For once, let us fold our tents and mind our own business.

Every time our government sticks it's nose into a foreign country's business,,, A bunch of our citizens get killed. In some of those countries, the people have been killing each other for thousands of years. You can't help some people. Leave them alone and let them live the life that they choose.

I would agree with you on most part, but those people also want to come here and kill us, question is what to do about that.

        Charlie,,,
What do you suggest ? Just keep on doing what we have been doing since the second world war ? How many people have been crippled and killed during the last 65 years ? I think that during the next 65 years the number will be higher.

Why do we have an embassy in Syria? What a waste of money- just annonce that US citizens are advised against travel there and if they do so it will be at their own risk.

This is a SERIOUS situation. People are being murdered daily by their own government! And we raise hell when our government imposes nutritional regulations aimed at children's health.
Anyone else see the irony? Closing our embassy sends a much needed message. We need to ramp-up pressure!

Isn't Assad in the US for medical help ??? Why are we even bothering with him and his regime ???

Not so sure, hypocrisy hasn't worked out so far with the rug heads Mr Obama , your administration badly lacks some neurons to weight the possibility that "diplomacy" could ever work with freaks that promote death as the ultimate experience ..

Just drop some Nukes on Iran Pakistan Afghanistan, it paid for Hiroshima !
      • Topkick 3 mths ago
I hope your comment is hyperbole. Because Nukes are not an option! Unless you want to face an ENTIRE world united against the U.S., and terrorists who would be justified for ANY extreme actions they take; and probably with universal support.

The fact is that Syria is going to what it is going to do. Russia and China can support that if they wish. In the long run it is probably a mistake, however it is not the place of our government to say. Pulling the embassy personnel out is probably a wise move. Simply it is not in our purview to tell another nation how to conduct their business. As this nation should realize. The people of the middle east will probably not be very like Americans any time soon. The philosophical differences are very great. There is a huge divide between the Muslim culture and the Christian culture that goes back to the middle ages and may be past that. Inside this divide are many centuries of distrust and hostility that make it harder for both parties to understand each other. The trust factor is the deciding factor. For the most part the religious concerns make things more difficult. This is simply because the individuals who wish a certain out come use the religion to their benefit. This seems to run to fomenting hate in the name of their deity. As near as I can tell neither the Prophet nor Jesus, preached hate. I think this is something that has been worked up by people who are frightened of customs they are not used to or wish to use the power of a group to influence a wide variety of people. The end result is the people in power wish to retain that power and will go to any length to preserve it. It matters not what religion they are nor what political affiliation they may be. Sadly humans have been doing this since we could think enough to form a government and we still have learned zero about ourselves.

Permanently closing the White House and all of Washington D.C. would be the best solution anyone can come up with to fix our country and solve the worlds problems. How come nobody is working on this? The United States Government things it owns the entire world. The citizens don't have any government left they can call their own. It was bought up a long time ago by the military defense contractors and major banks and large corporations.

Nonsense. Closing American embassy in Syria gives a breathing room to Assad government.
That ambassador (Ford) will not travel around and incite some circles in Syria against Assad.
Everything in Syria will come back to normal. Remember, Syria has support of China (who is the engine of the world) thus sanctions by the West are of no consequence, and Syria has arms deliveries from Russia and commitment of Russia to respect the Assad government.
Hillary can fume as much as she wants but hopefully others will not fall for that. Enough of stirring in Middle East. We see the failure effects of our government involvement in Libya and Egypt.

So much for the phoney "humanitarian" excuse for going into Libya. I guess we're more scared of China and Russia, our dear, dear friends, than we were of Colonel Wacky Kadaffy! Kudos to our fearless leader Colonel Klink who is warning Assad for the absolute last time. Just be honest, that's all we ask, don't be disingenuous. Closing the embassy may be a good safety measure...look at the mess in Egypt for which our fearless leader took a bow a few months ago.

I think the US government and those of NATO are in their final stages of gutting Syria, that could be the reason they closed it.
    • Christopher Yates  •  3 mths ago
The US closes it's embassy in Syria.
      Syrians don't give a crap.
