C’mon, Take Another Selfie—It’s for NASA

There’s no doubt about it: Selfies are everywhere. The highbrow Oxford English Dictionary named selfie 2013’s word of the year, and comparatively lowbrow electronic dance music duo Chainsmokers put the term all over the radio. But don’t say you’re sick of selfies just yet. NASA wants you to take another one, and this time it’s for Earth Day.

The space exploration agency has the ability to take endless photos of Earth—its Blue Marble Collection is a stunning catalog of images of the planet. But with the #GlobalSelfie project, NASA wants to see the world through your eyes.

According to the administration’s website, NASA decided to create “a crowd-sourced collection of snapshots of the people of Earth that we could use to create one unique mosaic of the Blue Marble.” To make that mosaic happen, the space agency wants people to take images of themselves in their natural environments—think mountains, lakes, and rivers, not you staring into your laptop camera. Along with showing the world your spectacular habitat, you’ll also need to hold up a sign telling NASA where on the planet you are—that’s how we’ll get to see your cute Earth Day outfit.

After that, all you have to do is post your photo to social media (Twitter, Instagram, Google+, NASA’s Facebook page, or Flickr) with the hashtag #GlobalSelfie.

NASA plans to cobble together all the photos into a video and a still image of Earth that will be viewable in May.
