    CNN Begins Streaming Live Feed to Web, iOS Devices

    CNN began streaming its live feed and archived videos to the Web on Monday, adding apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad on Monday to allow viewers to watch CNN on the go as well.

    Users can tune into CNN.com to see the feed, which is available to users for free - but only if they happen to subscribe to a cable package at home that includes CNN.

    CNN and Headline News (HLN) online and mobile streaming is currently available to approximately 50 million households with subscribers to participating pay TV providers, including: AT&T, Comcast, Cox, DISH Network, Suddenlink and Verizon, CNN said.

    "A principal goal for CNN is to make more of our content available to more people on more platforms, and CNN's participation in the TV Everywhere initiative is another step forward in that effort," said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide, in a statement. "We have long believed that our growth depends on keeping CNN essential and relevant to consumers wherever they are."

    Upon launching the CNN.com home page, users will be greeted with an expanding banner ad, which promises that the "new CNN video experience is here". If a user clicks on it, her or she is taken to the new CNN video page, where users can "unlock" the live video stream by logging in with their cable provider.

    CNN has also promised that the video will be scaled such that users can also explore other videos and archived footage while the live video is streaming. If users click on "Collections," for example, the live video shrinks to a corner of the screen, while users can connect to the archived video. That video then expands to fill the screen.

    CNN also launched free apps for Apple's iOS devices that offer an InstaPaper-ish view of the CNN home page, but with CNN headlines. The iPad app requires iOS 3.2 or later, while the the iPhone app requires iOS 3.0 or later.
