Gen. Colin Powell shares vintage selfie

'Eat your heart out Ellen!' former secretary of state writes

Proving he was way ahead of Ellen DeGeneres on the selfie curve, Gen. Colin Powell posted a vintage black-and-white photograph to Facebook on Thursday.

"Throwback Thursday," the 76-year-old former secretary of state wrote on his Facebook wall. "I was doing selfies 60 years before you Facebook folks. Eat your heart out Ellen!"

The image — which shows a young Powell, dressed in a shirt and tie and pointing a camera at a bedroom mirror — has been "liked" more 20,000 times on Facebook and has generated more than 4,000 shares and hundreds of comments.

According to Powell's assistant, Peggy Cifrino, the picture was taken in his parents home in the Bronx when he was about 16.

"His father had just bought him the yellow suede vest that he is wearing in the picture." Cifrino said in an email to Yahoo News. "In the Bronx in the 50s, that was pretty high style."

While popular on Facebook, it's doubtful Powell's selfie will achieve the record-breaking virality DeGeneres' did. The celebrity selfie she organized at the Academy Awards earlier this month became the most retweeted photo ever.
