College Students Consider Peace Corps in Lean Job Market

Volunteering abroad creates leadership skills and job opportunities.

When Laura Howland graduated from Northwestern University in 2007, the psychology major contemplated joining the Peace Corps. Instead, Howland took a job available to her at graduation, but she kept the Peace Corps in consideration.

"I've always been interested in global aid work," she says. "I had heard a lot of good things about the Peace Corps, and it always was something I wanted to try."

[Learn how to turn community service into scholarship money.]

A year after graduation, Howland began the grueling application process--which can take up to a year to complete--and, in February 2009, joined the Peace Corps. During her commitment, which ended in August 2011, she worked as a sustainable agriculture volunteer in Ecuador, where she taught youth about agriculture, the environment, and leadership, among other things. But, Howland notes, it's the skills that she learned that will positively impact her future.

"I think I've become someone who has learned to think about things in different ways," she says. "I've learned to work on projects given very little direction, [and] I'm more self motivated."

For college students today who are facing an unstable job market, the Peace Corps may be an appealing option as they make post-graduation plans. According to a January report by the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce, the jobless rate for recent college graduates is 8.9 percent. But students who completed non-technical majors, such as the arts or architecture, may face more difficulties, with jobless rates at 11.1 percent and 13.9 percent, respectively.

[Read about job openings that have jumped to near a three-year high.]

Adding certain skills to a r?sum? can help with the job search, and the skills gained from experiences in the Peace Corps "look great" to future employers, says Sue Dahlin, assistant director for career advising at the University of Puget Sound.

"After doing this work, [people] have a better understanding of their place in this world, [and] it makes them more resilient and capable to handle challenges [in their careers]," Dahlin notes.

The Peace Corps, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, currently has 9,095 volunteers serving in 76 countries, which is the organization's highest participation in 40 years. Recently, there has been a growing trend in the number of college students who apply to the Peace Corps after graduation, says Kristina Edmunson, deputy communications director, who credits the job market and a growing interest in public service for the increase.

Students are entering the Peace Corps with a defined set of skills, such as a foreign language background or extensive knowledge in international cultures, notes Edmunson, but they are coming back with skills that can be applied to careers in the United States.

[Some community colleges are stressing job skills.]

"Peace Corps service is a life-defining leadership opportunity," Edmunson says. "Our volunteers come back with significant leadership qualities, language skills, and technical skills. They come back with really creative, innovative ideas that take them to that next step in their career."

Beyond providing applicable career skills, the Peace Corps also compensates its active volunteers with a monthly stipend for living and housing expenses, offers student loan deferment and partial cancellation plans to eligible recipients, and provides $7,425, pre-tax, in transition funds upon completion of service.

Volunteers receive another perk: one year of noncompetitive eligibility for federal employment. Essentially, a volunteer will have priority placement in a government agency for 12 months from the day that individual has completed his or her Peace Corps commitments, assuming the individual meets minimum requirements for the position.

"It [virtually] puts you ahead of other job applicants in the United States," Edmunson says.

While service experience can give someone an advantage when applying for jobs, a college student should not consider the Peace Corps for that reason alone, notes University of Puget Sound's Dahlin.

"This is a challenging thing to take on," she says. "If you're going to the Peace Corps, you have to have a purpose. If you're looking to fill a gap [on a r?sum?], you may want to look at something else."

[Find out how you can get hired before graduation.]

For Howland, who served with the Peace Corps in Ecuador, it was a benefit to spend nearly two years in the professional world before joining the organization. "I think the more time you have out learning new things can be helpful," she says. "Depending on your situation, you may want a year or two to make sure you know this is what you want to do."

Howland, who is now working as a research assistant at Northwestern and is in the process of applying to Ph.D. programs, says that her experience with the Peace Corps has not only made her a stronger job candidate, but it's also ultimately made her a stronger person.

"I know it's funny to say something's a life-changing experience, but it was," she says. "You can't get this experience from just working or traveling abroad. It's very much a unique experience."

As a RPCV I am glad to see this article written, however the Peace corps is not always perfect and is flawed just like any company or government organization. I Served in Senegal, West Africa back in 2007. When I first got there things seemed great, however shortly after the flaws started to show. Volunteers were forced to go home because their ideas or personality did not match or fit with the current director. The language training was poor and people were taught the wrong language or admin could not even find the correct village to take the volunteer to. The Director at that time who was a die hard save the world kind of guy up and quit to take a 6 figure job with a gold mining company working in that country. I left my service at just under a year of time served. Why because my department director told me flat out my goals of digging a well in my village were to high and that it would look poorly if the task was completed by just one person. They told me I had 2 options. 1 stay and give my monthly stipend to my host family and villagers and travel around the country as I saw fit. Or 2 Go home. In his office I said "ticket please" The Peace Corps should be about change and helping others, yet when someone wanted to help make a change they were told not to. It was Neocolonialism at it finest. All this was reported to the Peace Corps when I returned to the US and I was granted full RPCV status. Is the Peace Corps like this in all places? No it is not, each and every volunteer will have a different experience, that's the great thing about the Peace Corps. However think long and hard about it and do lots of research. Thanks to the Peace Corps I had a life changing experience and would not trade it for anything ( even if it was not a good experience.) It has allowed me to travel the world and live and work in other places and help shape me into the person I am now. I'm Glad to say now that over 95% of the staff that was working there was replaced and the new Country Director is a very good man who was a former Volunteer in Senegal. He has done a great job and it has drasticly changed, so good for him. Think long, think hard, choose wisely this is my advice. Thank you for reading.

As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, Liberia 81-83, I am happy to see that this option is still something that recent grads are looking at. No matter the part of you life you are in, this will be one of the most profound things you will ever do. Just read about an 82 year old who is currently serving. Maybe there is a second time in it for me some day.

As a former PCV and parent to a current PCV, I will say that it is the best experience a young (or old) person can have. It is real life, with real problems to face, and an exciting and productive way to spend two or more years learning and sharing... Or you can stay home and troll the mall looking for a part time job.....But you have to have some skills to join Peace Corps. College works but so does real work experience in a good field.....Grow!

Anybody considering a term in the Peace Corps needs to check out the percentage of volunteers that are raped in their host countries. The PC's record of sweeping it under the rug makes the Catholic Church look like the ACLU.

Yeah...next thing we'll be reading is a rash of volunteers being hacked to death in 3rd world countries.
    • Bxgirl  •  3 mths ago
It will be a good experience for them. But back in the day volunteers joined because they
really wanted to help others, not for a job.

Any female joining the peace core and going to a 3rd world country is is a fool. There have been many cases of rape and even murder. The Peace Corp has been very hush hush.

Volunteer in a 1st world nation.

not necessarily a truth.... a little caution and contact in a community is part of the job and a way to avoid dangerous situations.

Just Google "peace corps rape" and you will find many news articles on the topic. Our government does not like to talk about how prevalent it is, but any woman thinking of joining the Peace Corps should know about it.
      • Judy 3 mths ago
I think if you google rape, the % is probably higher for a non Peace Corps woman than for someone in the PC. Do not let it dissuade you, this is one of the best things you can do, I did it, and 31 years later....still one of the things that has influenced my life the most.

I thought Barrack was going to get them all jobs. I guess the government isn't hiring Philosophy and Art majors

America has just lost several generations of young people because of the corruption in politics and Big Business that has denied them jobs. That is serious damage to the health of this country and while the corrupt people responsible will retire and die with all of the ill-gotten riches, the rest of America will suffer the sickening consequences.
