Colorado civil union bill advances toward showdown

DENVER (AP) — Gay couples waiting for rights similar to those afforded to married couples are closer to a legislative showdown with Colorado Republicans.

Hundreds of people packed a hearing room Wednesday at the state Capitol to plead with lawmakers to give them legal protections traditional couples enjoy. The issue has gained traction as more states have recently passed either civil union or gay marriage laws.

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper urged lawmakers to pass civil unions during his State of the State speech last month, and more Republicans have expressed public support for the measure.

A Senate committee approved civil unions legislation after hours of emotional testimony on a 5-2 vote, with one Republican senator joining Democrats. The bill is expected to easily clear the full Senate. The real challenge will be in the Republican-controlled House.

Shawna Kempainnen and Lisa Green urged lawmakers to allow them to have a civil union, describing the medical struggles of Green, who has multiple sclerosis.

"Truthfully, I need to know that Shauna can have what she needs to care for me," Green said. She said it's "inhumane" that she and her partner don't have the same legal protections as married couples.

"Every moment that I can spend with Lisa feels like poetry," Kempainnen said, adding that it's wrong for the government "limit how far we can go on our journey."

The bill addresses parental rights and child support when a same-sex couple separates. The bill would also grant same-sex couples other rights similar to what exist in a traditional marriage, such as the ability to be involved in their partner's medical and end-of-life decisions. It also would enhance inheritance and property rights.

Republican Sen. Kevin Lundberg, one of the opponents of the bill, said it undermines traditional marriage and goes against the wishes of Colorado voters, who banned gay marriage in 2006. He said the bill states civil unions are not marriage, but goes on to list marriage rights gay people would have.

"Do you not see that as being a legal jiu-jitsu to simply get around the term?" Lungberg asked Democratic Sen. Pat Steadman, a gay lawmaker from Denver who is sponsoring the bill. Lundberg asked Steadman if he would be satisfied with civil unions, or whether it was the first step to overturning the state's ban on gay marriage.

"I can tell you Sen. Lundberg that if this bill passes, I will avail myself of it," Steadman said. "I am a member of the class of unmarried persons who are eligible for this relationship, and it is one that I would seek. Beyond that, I cannot predict. The arc of history is one that bends toward justice," he said, triggering applause from the couple of hundred people in the room.

Steadman co-sponsored similar legislation that cleared the Senate with bipartisan support before being rejected in the House. That's where the bill's fate is expected to be decided again this year. House Republicans who oppose the bill hold a one-vote majority.

Republican House Speaker Frank McNulty has said he opposes the bill, but promises that it will get a fair hearing.

Opponents testifying in opposition to the bill used harsh language to say they believe homosexuality is wrong. They also worried that civil unions diminish traditional marriage.

"Anything that lessens (traditional marriage) lessens society at large. Marriage is the cornerstone of society," said the Rev. Bill Carmody, with Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs.

More than a dozen states allow either civil unions or same-sex marriage.

I am about as conservative as it gets and I don't understand why so many are against this. If you believe in the Constitution then how can you think its OK to denying someone rights just because you don't like them? Sounds kind of hypocritical to me.

Bill, therein lies the problem. You say people don't like gays. Totally untrue. Disagreeing with a lifestyle does not mean hatred. Do I agree with the lifestyle? Nope. Never will, but I don't hate gays. Tolerate, yes, accept, no. Murderers have families who still love them, but that does not mean they have to like the crime committed. Dems don't agree with Repubs, but that doesn't mean they hate each other. That means that they disagree.

Gay people have been around forever as evidenced in the bible. That aside, our country is one of equality. Despite guarantees for our freedom, conservatives want to say that some people are not as equal as others. This is the downfall of democracy and continues to plague our congress with trivial issues. Our Declaration says that all men are created equal. And then in reality uses tax laws that are anything but equal. These contradictions have permeated our country's history with unlawful fights. All men are created equal with the right to pursue individual liberty of their chosing. It is unlawful for any man to take away priviledge that was guaranteed to us by that declaration. Let no man doubt that the architects of adverse language are defiling the constitution with their individuals prejudices which ruin the lives of many while they enrich their own. Until all men are created equal on paper equates to all men are equal in real life, the revolution is not complete.

Any heterosexual couple who thinks that civil unions hurt their relationship has deep issues. They should see relationship counseling.

Civil unions do not hurt my personal relationship, but when they start trying to teaching my children that they must accept homosexual behavior as normal then it hurts my family and then I have a problem with civil unions. Just as parents who are having to deal with than exact issue in the California school systems.

Marriage, as recognized by the law, is not about love, children or religion.
Marriage is a business contract. Nothing more and nothing less.

Correction. They are not waiting for their "rights". It is our birthright to love and live with whomever we want. They are fighting for "legal protections" for their birthrights, protections from creepy spiritually disturbed religious freaks who want to use governments to control the genitalia of others and "punish" them for not obeying pet sets of religious ilk.

      Progress moves onwards...slowly...but always forward...

In 40 years everyone who opposes gay marriage will be dead or senile and, like segregation, anti-women's suffrage, and slavery, the current status quo will be a thing of the past.

Prop 8 of California should give notice as to whats next in this. The group will demand the term "Marriage" be applicable.

I've been asking one question regarding the opposition to gay 'marriage' for a couple decades now. I've NEVER ONCE gotten an answer. Lets try one more time. Please explain how a gay couple with the legal protections of 'marriage' damages anyone's hetrosexual marriage.

Marriage is just a word. Naming my dog "Cat" doesn't mean it's not a dog anymore. Everyone needs to stop living other people's lives for them. If you love someone, love them...don't waste a minute.
I am happily involved in a heterosexual relationship, so don't throw the gay card against me.

I've been in a loving, monogamous, faithful and devoted relationship with my partner for 24 years. We were finally married in Europe 5 years ago. The sky hasn't fallen in. No straight marriage has been weakened or diminished. My brother-in-law, who is himself straight, admitted to me that my husband and I were role models for his own marriage to the woman he loves. What threat is this to 'traditional' marriage? This *is* a traditional marriage, except that we are better at it than 52% of heterosexuals (just ask Newt Gingrich or Ms Kardashian). I humbly suggest that the Catholic hierarchy shut the heck up and attend to the moral rot at the heart of the Church, and treat gay people with the respect we deserve. It's always the christians (and a few mad orthodox jews and crackpot muslims) who oppose human equality, just as they always have. Enough is enough. We, the gay population of America, Europe, the civilised Western World, indeed *all* the planet, are marching towards equality and freedom from the hateful malice of the so-called 'godly' (who are nothing of the sort). Justice will out. And our opponents will one day have to explain to their children and grandchildren how they could have been so ignorant, arrogant and stupid in the fight for civil rights.

Why not just bite the bullet and offer benefits for 'all' roommates? Might as well since it seems the media is pushing the gay agenda. After all, isn't the difference between the two, roommates and gay couples .. same sex practice? Think on it. What's to keep two roommates, one working with benefits and one not, from claiming they are gay so that they get benefits from the one's insurance. Guess kids are not in the equation or one person working homesteads with one raising the kids managing the house the other working to support the home. No wonder companies are ending health benefits almost entirely. The expense has to be overwhelming for all except the most profitable.
