Comcast subscribers almost stop cancelling cable

NEW YORK (AP) — It's become the routine in the cable industry that subscribers stream out the door every quarter, hanging up on cable in favor of service from satellite or phone companies. But in the October to December quarter, Comcast Corp. nearly managed to stop that flow.

The country's largest cable company on Wednesday said it lost 17,000 TV customers in the fourth quarter, the smallest number of defections in five years. It compares with a loss of 135,000 subscribers in the same quarter a year earlier.

Comcast credits more video programming available on more screens, like tablets and phones, and better customer service for the improved retention. Its stock jumped nearly 5 percent Wednesday.

CEO Brian Roberts said the company will start growing its video subscriber base once the economy improves and new households start forming.

"We may not get back to full growth on video for a while, because we don't see housing growth at the moment, but some day, that's going to happen," he told analysts on a conference call.

The Philadelphia-based company added a net 336,000 broadband customers in the same period. That was the best fourth-quarter result in years. Both cable and phone companies have been reporting declining numbers, since more than two-thirds of U.S. households already have broadband Internet.

The result indicates that Comcast keeps stealing broadband customers from phone companies. Together, AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. added a net 49,000 broadband customers in the period.

The strong Internet subscriber figures helped boost Comcast's profit for the quarter. The TV business also helped, thanks to higher prices and upselling to bigger programming packages.

Comcast on Wednesday reported net income of $1.29 billion, or 47 cents per share, for the quarter. That's up 26 percent from $1.02 billion, or 36 cents per share, in the last three months of 2010.

Analysts polled by FactSet were on average expecting earnings of 41 cents per share.

Revenue was $15.04 billion, up 55 percent from $9.72 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010. The increase was due mainly to the acquisition of NBC Universal, which closed a year ago. Revenue rose 3 percent when factoring in NBC Universal in the previous-year figure.

Analysts had forecast revenue of $14.94 billion.

Comcast ended the quarter with 22.3 million video subscribers and 18.1 million broadband subscribers, keeping its position as the biggest supplier of both TV and Internet connections to U.S. households.

The cable provider said it was raising its annual dividend from 45 cents to 65 cents per share, and also authorized a new $6.5 billion stock buyback program. The company intends to buy back $3 billion in shares this year. The dividend is worth $1.8 billion to shareholders annually.

Comcast shares rose $1.27, or 4.7 percent to close at $28.52 Wednesday. They hit a four-and-a-half-year high of $29.05 earlier in the day.

For all of 2011, Comcast earned $4.16 billion, or $1.50 per share, up 14 percent from $3.64 billion, or $1.29 per share, in 2010.

Full-year revenue was $55.8 billion, up 47 percent from $37.9 billion in 2010.

No one left because we are not f'n allowed to if we want television. Comcast owns contracts with almost EVERY apartment complex here, If it's not comcast, YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE IT. Fk comcast, Worst company on the planet, Terrible customer service, NO CHANNELS and retarded TV packages screwing you out of having all the channels you actually want.

I hate apartments like that and refuse to ever live in an area locked to one provider (also known as a monopoly).

Keep customers by offering a cafeteria type package. $X/mo. for connection; $Y/mo. per channel for each one you want. Why do I have to support those program sites I have no interest in watching with the rediculous "tier packages; To get one I want to see, I pay for 10 I'll never watch just so the cable company gets money from them for exposure. Sounds like business socialism to me. If people don't want to subscribe/pay for them let them fail.

while i prefer "a la carte" as you describe, it's more the network that offers those channels that forces you to get these "packages". not to say the cable company isn't screwing you as well, but it all starts with the content owner. They bundle crap channels to increase their ad revenue to the channels they know you'll watch. To make money off the bundle, the cable company then adds on top of the price of the bundle, and the rest is history.

TooCrooked: Since Comcast is now a Content Owner/Provider (NBCUniversal), a huge chunk of the blame falls on their shoulders. From what I saw when working on their facilities, they aren't hurting for $$ either...

There will never be a "a la carte" cable TV or satellite service and to even suggest that it should happen proves to me you are uninformed. If that happened and you we able to actually get the 10-20 channels you want, you would be paying the same price or close to what you pay now. Your bill would not change, just because they take other channels out doesn't mean it would cost less, the A LA carte channels would simply cost more

Great speech , whose first ? You might ought to run for pres. or at least congress , but before I join your movement , I want to see 10,000 other people on the band wagon.

Unfortunately I enjoy live programming so it stays for now. If they ever get on board and stream over the net it will be Netflix all the way!!!

Who can blame anyone for leaving....I am next! My Comcast bill is $87/mo, for which I get NO premiums, NO HiDef, NO DVR. I would love to try FIOS, but they only wire affluent areas.

Get directv it's better and more bang for the dollar and then just find a cheap internet provider

Try a antenna, I never had cable. live 60 miles from NY get all but 2 channels, those two broadcast on VHF not UHF, (2 & 11), All of Conn. everything is HDTV.
Understand the new antennas are better but have no need to update now.
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
the antenas are the same an old antena in your attick works fine as a "digital antena what different is the tuner in your tv. you can get a cheap internet provider with 1.5Mbps with horrible customer service and refuse to upgrade tour area(ATT)
or you can get Comcast and get garanteed 20Mbps and even get 30Mbps at times of low usage.

Best bet for cable companies would be to offer a base package which would include local channels plus a couple sports channels and a few others. Then if you wanted Speed, the History, etc, you pay a dollar or two, as one comment said, for extra. I dropped my Direct TV about 2 years ago simply because I couldn't see paying $80 a month for 120 channels with only about 7 or 8 I wanted to watch. Do I miss my TV - maybe only when there is severe weather in the area and I'm curious to know if there's a tornado coming thru - but I can get that info off my computer.
      • Spice 3 mths ago
or using digital antenna you can get your local channels, free!
      • amma 3 mths ago
They would not give me all the channels i get from the antenna.
      • John 3 mths ago
They do offer a package like that where I live.

"The Washington Post reports that a little old lady took a hammer to Comcast. Apparently fed up with the lousy service she received from a botched Comcast installation of "triple-play", and a completely humiliating experience at a customer service center, 75-year-old Mona "The Hammer" Shaw took her claw hammer back to the customer service center and bludgeoned the office equipment into tiny plastic pieces."

Give me the ability to pay ala cart for the channels I want, $1 or $2 each, and I will come back and turn on cable. But with an antenna, I get 30 channels in HD now. Sure I miss them, but can live without them as I did before they came. Or offer a 5/10/15/20 pack and let you choose which you want. I dont need 150 channels of crap. Give me OPTIONS COMCAST!!!!

I used to get Cable for the science fiction channel.... But now it stinks so bad it is not worth it. I now get TV off the air and netflix and save nearly $100 a month.

cancel your cable/satellite and get internet service. there are a million websites that offer re-runs of your favorite shows. go to the library and get dvd's and blu-ryas for free.
    • tk  •  3 mths ago
What I do not like is having to PAY for infomercials - sometimes that is the only programming on many of the channels available.
    • larry  •  Billings, Montana  •  3 mths ago
I don't need any of them. I think I'll go fishing and spend time with my family instead. Novel concept huh?
    • Rod E  •  3 mths ago
Judging by the other comments there is an obvious trend here. Don't make us pay for things we don't want. The consumers aren't stupid. We begin to notice things like turning on the TV and switching through about 10 channels before we swap over to netflix or put in a DVD. About half of the subscribers you have left just send in the bill every month without thinking about it because that's what they've always done. The other half is divided up between the 'not very tech savvy and don't realize the options' and people in rural america where dial-up is still the norm and too slow for streaming.

"But in the October to December quarter, Comcast Corp. nearly managed to stop that flow."

That's only because there isn't anyone left to leave, they've already jumped ship. Comcast sucks, their Nazi like policies have had people leaving them in droves.
    • amma  •  3 mths ago
Could be they ran out of customers that have other option, or are not tied to contract too expense to break. Ask how many of those that left, would they return?
    • james  •  3 mths ago
      comcast sucks...theives...i'll never go back.

Customer service is key. When I start reading about any service provider who provides excellent customer service, I am there. When I had Comcast is was a nightmare but Verizon makes them look like a sweet dream.

F Comcast...they treat their customers like crap...trust me...I saw it first hand for the entire 12 years I worked there. They don't care about their customers!!!
