Comedy club announces Jerry Lewis Award, Web-athon

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Comedians who think Jerry Lewis was unceremoniously dumped from his post as chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and face of its annual telethon are holding a Web-athon of their own.

Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada said his club will hold a fundraiser on Monday featuring comedians such as Norm Crosby and Dave Chappelle. Fans can watch the performances online and make donations.

Proceeds of the event will be presented to those working toward a cure for muscular dystrophy as the Jerry Lewis Award. Masada said the event will be held annually on Labor Day until a cure is found.

The MDA announced last month that it was parting ways with Lewis after 45 years but offered no explanation for the split. Days after the announcement, Masada and comedians including Paul Rodriguez and Larry Dreesen gathered in support of the 85-year-old comedian.

In a letter dated Aug. 19, Lewis thanked Masada and the "funny men" for their efforts and expressed his "deepest appreciation and pride."

Lewis has not commented on what led to his departure from the MDA.

The MDA's annual telethon will be held Sunday.

Love him or hate him, he knew what was needed to make money for a cause, and knew research was fueled by the monies raised. 45 years of faithful, committed service to MDA should have been recognized by the telethon producers with a humanitarian award. Jerry, you did it your way. As always, you will be a tough act to follow.

Jerry Lewis has expressed open contempt for gays and says women should stay home with the kids.

Not many stopped to drop something in the boot.

      Oh, please!
Why doesn't anyone ask how much money Lewis received for his weekend beg-athon on Labor Day Weekend, all these years? Ask, how much of the percentage grossed from donations went into paying Jerry to stand up and beg for money for the suffering children, so that he could get his cut first?

It's long overdue, the MS telethon sponsors kicking that whack job loose. He's never had any real talent, he's always been a half-azzed comedian who was nothing without Martin covering his back and now that his self destructive lifestyle has caught up with him, he's losing his mind and the symptoms go directly to his hate filled mouth!
Little treasures suffering MS don't need that hack begging for money so he can live large, because he has no other income and not much sense left.
They're better off without him! A real open heart for their plight would take his salary and donate it to their cause. Lewis was in this for the money! And nothing else.
Bye Jerry! It's about dam* time!

Do not forget the kids . After all , this is what it was all about.

Well, there's really no one left with any talent in the entertainment business anymore, so it's difficult to see how they can hope to continue the telethon in any form. However, the idea of a "web-a-thon" is pretty sad. I seriously doubt if anyone will be desperate enough to visit their website. What would motivate a person to do so?

As far as I knew..Jerry was M.D.A. (More than just a host) Jerry can and will survive without them.."But can they they survive withoun Jerry's image backing them?? (Not at my house) "The telethon will not disgrace the big screen in my house anymore..

I haven't watched the MDA Telethon in many years...BUT - had planned to watch this year, knowing it was to be the final Telethon that Jerry Lewis was to host over, then retire. I have many great memories of the years he did it, and those that helped over the years....from the years with Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Orlando, etc. Years ago the BIG stars of TV and Movies would give of their time, unlike the past years, so I got bored with it.
To Jerry Lewis......Thank you for all the years for that special part of you that you put in with the Telethon. You are greatly loved. And I STILL watch movies that you made..they are classics!!

When I think back to the earlier telethons I remember how tired Jerry was by the end of the show. His wife Patty would come on stage and walk off with him while the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" played. Thank you Jerry. "Jerry's kids" will forever be greatful for your love and devotion to them.

I'm saying it now, without Jerry Lewis the MDA telethon loses at least 10 million from last year. But of course the organization big wigs will claim it's because of the poor economy and they are very grateful. Had Jerry Lewis hosted for the final time I'm sure it would have been another record record breaking year.Because of adults ego problems now the children are the ones to suffer......

You are a phucking moron if you really believe they brought in 2.6 million more this year than last. This is nothing more than propaganda bullshit to please idiots like you.No way was it at all possible, but of course it makes morons like yourself believe.

I have watched the telethon since I was a baby. My cousin was one of Jerry's kids. I never missed a year, even when I was in the hospital and I always donated. I met Jerry at an event and was surprised that he was not the nicest guy in the world, but that doesn't take away from what he did for the kids.I am outraged and will not be watching. The kids are going to suffer for the decisions of the powers that be. I am sure that this telethon will not do well.I will check out the online option to donate.

Do you ever wonder if a cure will ever be found for any disease? Not to be mean, but if they found a cure for any disease that an organization specifically raises money for in donations, that organization would close down and all the employees would lose their jobs. The MDA who dumped Jerry proves they don't care by dumping the person who has been loyal to them for 45 years and raised hundreds of millions if not billions for MDA research. Being that most American companies are greedy and actually care less for their employees and the people they are supposed to help makes me wonder. I have diabetes and I support the ADA, and other organizations for diseases my friends have, but I still wonder if a cure will be found or if one has been found, but not released. When it comes to Big Corporations/Organizations, GREED has taken over. Based on other news posts, it goes to show the little people (us) are the only honest and caring people. Look at all the news articles showing the average American giving back money they found instead of keeping it even though they really need that money. You don't see news articles of big companies giving back to the community or using their profits to open more locations to create more jobs. I feel sorry for Jerry Lewis who had done so much for the MDA. I hope he knows the "average joe", we who donated to the MDA all these years appreciate and respect him.

Amazing insight to the truth. Corporations run on greed.
      • NY 8 mths ago
Don't forget, it's not just the corporations, the government makes millions off of all these organizations. Even non-profits have salaries to pay, which generates taxable income.

After everything that Jerry did for the MDA, they treated him like crap, and don't deserve the support of the public.

TO ALL FORMER UPSILON LAMBDA PHI FRATERNITY BROTHERS; Remember we were one of the original supporters of Jerry Lewis and MDA in the 1950's . I am originally from Pa. Used to go around town with large paper container, a size similar to what we used to drink beer. Coleected til I graduated HS.
Always watched the show. Made a donation. NO MORE after this!

My suspicion is that there is a lot the public does not know about this. First, Mr. Lewis had pretty much made it clear that this would be his last year of hosting the telethon. Why on earth would MDA unceremoniously "dump" their chairman and primary spokesman before his last telethon? Makes no sense. Having met Mr. Lewis behind the scenes at an MDA function, I can oinly guess that he might have pi**ed someone important off, as he can be highly acerbic and abrasive in person and offstage, beyond the point of mere rudeness. That is not to take anything away from what he has done in front of the camera to help MDA, just part of the "Jerry not too many see."
    • Bobcat  •  8 mths ago
It is so very ugly how they severed ties with Jerry Lewis. He did tremendous work, and the telethon is what is today because of him. Americans are more rude, insensitive and formalities of decency are done less and less. Kindness is becoming a second thought and left there. What has happened? We have become the land of ME and what is mine is mine. Pull your on weight baby because social responsibility is dying fast. Increased greed is justified by a flag waving and talk about individual responsibility which really means everyone on their own and don't care about anybody else.

45 years of loyal service and Jerry Lewis gets the unceremonious heave ho from the MDA. It's the American way.
      • Lisa D 8 mths ago
It's a classless way for sure. There's always been too little recognition for those who have made well known and successful corporations what they are--the day to day workers. Now even the backbone of an organization gets the heave ho. No respect for loyalty or appreciation for accomplishments. There's no excuse for it.
