Yahoo News asked readers to react to Sen. Marco Rubio's Republican response on Tuesday night. Here's one perspective.
COMMENTARY | During Marco Rubio's response to President Obama's State of the Union address, he brought up many good points. I was particularly interested in two of those points because they personally affect me. He spoke of our nations need for less government control, and how the higher taxes President Obama is proposing will hurt our middle class.
I do agree with Sen. Rubio; our federal government needs to be smaller. It needs to defer a lot of the things it works on right now to the states. Extra government oversight costs tax payers more money, increases our deficit, and makes federal programs more confusing. We need to give more control back to the states, who know what is important for their locality.
The other issue Sen. Rubio raised was about increased taxes on the middle class. I would consider myself in the lower-middle class, and I have already seen the effects of increased taxes and President Obama's health care reform. My taxes have gone up about $140 a month, and my health insurance costs have gone up about $40 a month. I am taking home a total of $180 a month less than I was a few months ago. I am already struggling with this hit to my income; I am worried about what more taxes may do.
I agree with most of Sen. Rubio's concerns, and hope that both parties can come together with solutions that work for America.
