Commentary: Rubio’s Less Government, Less Spending Mantra is Refreshing

Yahoo News asked readers to react to Sen. Marco Rubio's Republican response on Tuesday night. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | How refreshing it was to hear Sen. Marco Rubio's response to Obama's State of the Union Speech. He actually encourages fewer taxes and government spending. For the past four years, I have watched our debt grow beyond $16 trillion. In Rubio's rebuttal, he mentioned President Obama created more debt in four years than his predecessor did in eight.

The uncertainty created by the debt is one reason why many businesses aren't hiring; it was a statement that needs to be heard. We will not be able to sustain a vibrant middle class until our debt problem is addressed. This response is exactly the opposite of the policies promoted by President Obama.

I have to stay within a budget with my family like most other middle-class Americans. It is time that our government recognized this problem, and I am so glad that Marco Rubio on Tuesday night brought America an alternative to the Obama way of putting our country in even more debt. I hope folks listen to this, and write their representatives and urge them to consider Rubio's response when they vote on budget proposals.
