Last month U.S. employers added 236,000 jobs to non-farm payrolls and unemployment fell to 7.7%. These are positive signs that things are turning around--but a whopping 12 million Americans are still looking for work.
Good news job seekers: Some of America's biggest and brightest companies are looking to fill thousands of well-paying positions. Forbes and the online job search engine Indeed.com have put together a list of the 15 companies that have the most postings right now for jobs that pay at least $60,000 a year.
The picture we offer does not reflect a precise number of available jobs. An opening can be listed in more than one place and can remain online for some time after it's filled. Nevertheless, the numbers do offer a strong, broad gauge of which companies are expanding and taking on the most new workers.
"This year is off to a nice start,” says Michael Werch, a communications manager at Indeed.com. “The next BLS report should mark the 36th straight month of jobs gains and the previous report showed a healthy uptick in hiring over the prior month. The number of jobs on Indeed last month rose about 5%, which is a strong gain for the period.”
The Seattle-based e-commerce behemoth Amazon takes the No. 1 spot. The world’s largest online retailer is trying to fill 2,407 jobs that pay $60,000 or more a year.
Amazon is looking for software development engineers, project managers, and financial analysts, among others. The top five places for Amazon jobs? Seattle, Boston, Palo Alto, Herndon, Va., and New York City.
Oracle, the tech giant headed by billionaire Larry Ellison, currently has 2,350 postings for jobs paying $60,000 or more a year. Headquartered in Redwood City, Calif., Oracle is looking to hire software developers, sales representatives, application developers and consultants all over the country. While most openings are in California (Redwood Shores, Santa Clara, Pleasanton and Redwood City), the company is doing its heaviest hiring in Bentonville, Ark.
Rounding out the top three is Microsoft, the Redmond, Wash.-based multinational software corporation. It currently has 2,089 listings for jobs that pay $60,000 or more--including software development engineer, program manager, enterprise architect, and attorney positions. It’s doing its heaviest hiring in Washington, California, D.C., and New York.
“There’s a lot happening right now at Microsoft," says Angela Romei, a marketing manager for Microsoft Global Staffing and Recruiting . "Four trends--mobility, social, cloud and big data--are shaping our strategy. Our focus is to make connecting, sharing and executing easier for everyone. We are seeking the talented designers, builders, architects and makers who will reinvent how people work and build the next generation of computing and entertainment experiences.”
Elsewhere on the list, JPMorgan Chase, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Apple, and AT&T are looking to fill thousands of positions for jobs that pay $60,000 or more a year.
"Considering the job market in the last years, I think that any growth--regardless of its pace--should give people hope for finding employment,” Werch says. “On Indeed, we currently have millions of searchable jobs, anything from a truck driver to a retail manager to a chemical engineer, and we've seen that volume grow since the start of the year."
