Companies Often Find Creative Ways to Get Rid of Employees

COMMENTARY | Ever hear about a company that boasts, "We've never laid off an employee!" Impressive, huh? Especially in this all consuming economy we've all been dealing with the last few years. AOL Jobs just posted a list of 10 companies THAT can brag that they've never laid anyone off.

But don't be fooled. Some companies (not necessarily those on the list, which, incidentally is mostly health care related), will find creative ways to circumvent layoffs. Can you really blame them? You can kiss quality applicants goodbye if you report high numbers of layoffs. And it looks bad to potential partners and customers.

But nonetheless, it does happen and here are the two major ways they do this.

    Early Retirement

Many companies, instead of layoffs, will select people for early retirement and offer an enticing package. Lay off, early retirement, it's all the same right? Not officially. If they can get people to take that retirement package, they can still retain bragging rights that they've never laid anyone off. And many companies will kindly urge their employees to take the package; if they were forced to lay off those they offered early retirement to, the exit package might not be as alluring.

    Cut Hours

An hourly employee is in a precarious position. Their livelihood depends solely on the number of hours they are allowed to work. This is an often abused position, too, not by the employees themselves but by management. Instead of laying off these employees, they will simply cut their hours. They use the employee's hours as leverage against them, often times forcing the employee to voluntarily leave for another job because they can't pay their bills.

Want to know what's really going on without having to rely on "official" reports that can be misleading? Ask employees who work where you are thinking of applying. It can give you a deeper look into a company than those reports ever could.

Some companies will make your life a living Purgatory until you quit in disgust. If you get laid off because of "Lack Of Work", the company is on the hook for unemployment benefits. If you quit or get fired "For Cause", they're off the hook.

Purgatory isn't a bad thing, but I get your point

Walmart cuts their employees hours to 10 a week so you are forced to quit on your own. Walmart will be replaced soon as they are getting too expensive now. Like other stores that eventually failed, you are only in business as long as you have customers that want to save money. In this economy they are operating on borrowed time....

Walmart will be replaced soon? Sorry, but only in your dreams. We can only hope, though, right?
      • Mr. Madd 3 mths ago
no.....they are operatining on China dimes, not borrowed time!

When you turn 55, they demote you if you don't quit they fire you because they can.

What it amounts to is many companies are full of %^&*. If they need any help getting rid of people they can always call Mitt...he likes to fire people and would no doubt like to make more people poor so he does not need to be concerned about them.

HOW low can a COMPANY GO???
      • Mariah 3 mths ago
It's not the companies fault. It's the fool that sold his soul to eat chicken feed.
      • SimpleMan 3 mths ago
Mariah, ok, i go to my boss and say "I want a fair wage". i'll be laid off in less then a week. i don't know about you but rent is not free where i live. I don't have a BF/GF to pay for my stuff. I have to work and work hard. Unless you work for the government (good luck getting in) you work and stay under the RADAR to keep your job and chicken feed so you can keep your rat hole APT in the hood

Now THIS is creative: My company fired me less than 2 weeks after getting out of the hospital with lung clots, I almost died. They told me "I wasn't the person for the future of the company". I had never received a corrective action, and they gave me no notice whatsoever. But it gets even more creative! They promised to pay my COBRA for 6 months, and never paid a dime. I am not kidding you.

my god that's horrid hope you are feeling better
      • SimpleMan 3 mths ago
if you have it in writing (always get it in writing w/ a signature) you can get it paid w/ expenses. and yes, they always do that
      • nanchan 3 mths ago
you need to contact a labor attorney or worker's comp attorney. I didn't TU you because I"m mortified by your story, but unfortunately, have seen it happen to others and know your case is not unique. be good to yourself. best of luck.

Less educated people have always been canon-fodder and factory wage slaves for the elites. Fortunately, these type of people have also been very easy to brainwash, typically by creating an external enemy and misusing their patriotic feelings.

The middle class in the USA has known about this, but not really cared, because they worked hard, educated themselves and (sued to) do well. So they believed "in the system" as well, because it "worked" for them.

Now, that much of the middle class has been destroyed, many have woken up to how sewed and controlled this system really is. Fact: the globalist cabal has long taken over all western nations and all of you (yes even most graduate degreed people) are nothing but higher paid wage slaves; expendable "human resources" little wheels in their machine.

Since all of the population has also been brought up to believe in the credit-based and endless GDP growth fairy tales, most people have always lived beyond their means, often just a few paychecks away from defaulting on mortgage payments etc.

Loyalty has been a foreign word since at least the early 90ies and in the past 10 years (at least) disloyalty has also become the norm in relationships.

am I missing something? I only saw 2 "creative ways" ???

Seems they missed the one where employers just make your life miserable until you bolt for the door.
    • Calvin  •  3 mths ago
That exact thing is happening to me. At the beginning of the year, I got cut from an average of 27 hours a week to an average of 18. I'm not happy, and I'm going to keep my eyes open for better opportunities.

The many schemes they get rid employees they don't like without firing are, no raise, intentionally keep making mistake on their pay-checks, bundle more work loads with time period, put them on on-call and only call them to work on random schedule, cut hours, engineer an unstable work schedules. And if you're on sale, they delay your sales commission, intentionally compute your commission, unknown charge backs and etc., etc...

Companies do what they want when they want to. They consult with their attorneys and know what they can get away with before they send out the hatchet man.
    • Mariah  •  3 mths ago
That's what you get when you choose to work for chicken feed. They can get rid of your #$%$ with any made up excuse.
    • Slick  •  Port Orange, Florida  •  3 mths ago
And then they don't have to pay any unemployement

Have a cousin in CA who has worked as a master mechanic for a Toyota Dealership in SF for over 30 years. A couple of years ago, they said they were eliminating his job due to low sales. No Layoff or offer for early retirement. Two weeks after his job was eliminated, they hired someone to fill the vacant job he held.
Brother-in-Law in KY was a shop foreman for Ryder Trucking. He had to give workers who were 55 or going to be 55 by a certain date, notices to take early retirements or expect to be passed up for promotions and possibly transfered to the worst locations Ryder could find. The reason given was lack of work. Of course Ryder filled those slots plus within a few months.

This list is too sparse. Ask my friend who's been required to work 20-30 hours free overtime but then was also hit with a pay CUT... down to either $400 or $440/week... her employer is trying to get her to quit. Meanwhile when you average out what she is paid versus her hours, she is getting less than minimum wage. No wonder she is the second-to-longest-serving employee there out of 12 employees, and has only been working there a little over a year.
