Confederate sub upright for first time since 1864

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship is upright for the first time in almost 150 years, revealing a side of its hull not seen since it sank off the South Carolina coast during the Civil War.

Workers at a conservation lab finished the painstaking, two-day job of rotating the hand-cranked H.L. Hunley upright late Thursday.

The Hunley was resting on its side at a 45-degree angle on the bottom of the Atlantic when it was raised in August 2000 and scientists had kept it in slings in that position in the lab for the past 11 years.

But they needed to turn it upright to continue with the job of conservation.

Scientists hope the hidden side of the sub will provide clues as to why the Hunley sank with its eight-member crew in February, 1864, after sending the Union blockade ship Houstonic to the bottom.

While there was no immediate clue from a first look at the hidden hull but "we are seeing some tantalizing clues on that side," Hunley archaeologist Maria Jacobsen said Friday.

Scientists knew there were large hull breaches on the starboard side that remained out of view all these years. Jacobsen said the area around the holes is smooth, as the sediment that has hardened on the hull was blasted away. It's not clear whether the breaches are manmade — caused by an explosion or the like — or simply caused by nature.

She said it likely could have been scoured away by water and tides.

"We may be dealing with nature here. How can these massive hull breaches occur?" she asked.

"Nothing jumps out at me" from seeing the starboard side, said state Sen. Glenn McConnell, the chairman of the South Carolina Hunley Commission. "But we will be examining it for any clue that might be there to help us solve the mystery."

There are various theories why the sub sank. It could have been damaged by fire from the Housatonic or the sub's crew was knocked out by the concussion from the blast that sank that ship. Or it could have been damaged by another Union vessel rescuing the Housatonic.

Studies show the crew died of a lack of oxygen and didn't drown. The remains of the crew, who were buried in 2004, were found at their stations and there seemed no rush to the escape hatch.

McConnell said seeing the submarine upright brings it alive.

"Instead of looking like an artifact, it now looks like a stealth weapon," he said.

"It's as if you are looking at the submarine for the first time," agreed conservator Paul Mardikian. "Before it was more like a mass of inert metal. Now it looks like something that had a life."

The next step in conserving the Hunley comes next week when it will be lowered onto keel blocks to hold it upright. It will probably be a month before a truss and the slings that suspended the sub from it will be removed, providing an even better view of the submarine.

The delicate process of righting the sub involved rotating it between 800 and 1,000 millimeters. A team of workers adjusted the slings by 2 millimeter increments during the two days the job took.

"It went better than it had any right to do," said Mike Drews, the director of the conservation center. "Knowing there were unknowns, we always erred on the side of caution."

By the way, moron, you aren't American if you secede. You're just a filthy, no good traitor.

Different Steve here... he's simply honoring his ancestors who fought so long and hard with so little in the lines of armaments, food, clothing, shelter, and manpower. They were quite amazing.
At appamattox, many Union troops had tears in their eyes as they realized The War was over, and stated "They deserved to win!". Read the books.

Good men died on both sides in the war. You can argue the cause all you want, but the story here is perserving this piece of history for all of us to see. I have often wondered how the men on that sub actually died? If the men really did die from lack of oxygen, how frustrating it must have been to know that air was so close to the top of the sub and not being able to get to it. I live in the north and am grateful for the freedom that ALL AMERICANS share .

They apparently didn't rush for the exit, so it's more likely they were knocked unconscious, or suffered CO2 poisoning during the rowing. As I recall, it wasn't that deep where it was found, if they had been able to open the hatch they might have been able to swim to the surface, if they were aware of what was going on.

would you tach your friends something that would give you power over them?
      or them power over you?
you would be crazy to teach them power over you? wouldn't you?

Sounds as if Munkee should go back down in mommy's basement where he belongs! The civil war is a scar on this nation where both north and south suffered. Wherever you live, the least you can do is to learn the history of the brave people that fought for what they believed in.We just need to be smart enough to learn from past mistakes. As for north and south divisions, this crap is perpetuated by people who don't have a clue what they are talking about.

These comments are truely astonishing! They were not left by children, they were left by full blown morons. What could cause people to think this way? Wow!!!

According to the article, when questioned about some large holes in the side of the Hunley, archaeologist Maria Jacobsen said "We may be dealing with nature here." And she rhetorically asked: "How can these massive hull breaches occur?" Her answer was that it (meaning the holes) likely could have been scoured away by water and tides. I agree with that assessment, but that actually goes against an earlier conclusion (made by archaeologists working on the wreck) that the Hunley was rapidly buried and was not uncovered again until 1995, when it was partially dug up (without following standard archaeological protocols) and video-taped to prove that they had been there. Some people had used the conclusion that the Hunley was buried for over a hundred years to support their claim that I could not have found the wreck (even though the wreck was where I had mapped it). I went through that earlier scientific data very carefully, saw some serious problems with it and found that the data from the coring samples could just as easily been used to support my claims. I didn't use it, and they shouldn't have used it, because the data was unreliable, as had been correctly pointed out by the geologist that actually ran the tests. Moreover, the test cores were inapplicable even if they had been reliable. If the large holes in the wreck are natural and the result of scouring, it supports what I have said for decades and that is that the sands at the Hunley site were extremely dynamic (otherwise they couldn't have done that damage). I have always insisted that the sands at the site were constantly shifting, covering, uncovering and recovering the wreck to different degrees. That was why the wreck was partially exposed when I found it, yet was entirely buried the next time that I went to the site. Those moving sands can act like sandpaper and can abrade portions of a wreck.

could the Huntley have been on the surface and dashed against some rocky shoals? or even shelled by Union gun boats, or maybe a mine? would not the metal around the holes be tapered from the sand too? and the rest of the haul be very thin in places from the sand damage? is not iron from back then brittle, and break like a glass plate? I mean, if it was rammed, or hit with a shell, would not 19TH century iron just break like an egg? I'm asking because I once saw a cast iron bathtub from around this time shatter, it was turnned upside down with a stick of tnt, it just blew holes in it, with no sign of where the charge was, inside or outside, the rim around the three large holes had no blow out from the blast? what was the weather like, was it very cold? the month it was lost, it was very cold, was there ice on the huntley? have you ever taken a hammer to an old peice of iron with ice on it? and did the south have a good iron works at this time? was this iron tempered and made right?
      • DAVY CROCKETT 9 mths ago
I do remember the story of shells bouncing off the ironclads, but where they hit on the Union clad was round, and where they hit on the merrimack southern clad was wood enforced with iron

I know of this because my birthday is March 9TH when the Monitor and Merrimack fought.

A big thank you to Mr. Clive Cussler, marine salvage expert and author, for recovering the Hunley in the first place.

A lot of strange people commenting here. I wonder how many are serious and how many are actually over 10 years old.

Some rough remarks from fellow Americans-leave history in the past and learn from the mistakes of our previous generations-if you know anything about this horrendous war, it should have never happpened-it wasn't about freedom, it was about GREED~

Interesting stuff. I had never been in the olde south until I was in the Army and stationed in Georgia. I could only think, "This is what was so grand to die for? You gotta be kidding".

I have lived in the north and the south and I can tell you the south is just as grand!

This is a fascinating project. The people who funded raising the Hunley and getting it where it can be restored are making a great contribution to Civil War history.

Kudos to Clive Cussler and NUMA for finding the Hunley.

There appear to be many commentors who are ignorant of the feelings of the Union troops upon seeing the Confederates surrendering at Appomattox. They wept for the Confederates... read the books!!
At the reunions in years afterward, they were all brothers; it was exceedingly rare that animosity arose.
At the final Gettysburg reunion (I believe it was the 50th), it is written that the death rate of vets before and during the reunion was around 1 or 2 percent. On the platforms at the train station to go home, 25-30% died right there. On the trips home, around 60% of those remaining died, and many more upon arrival home and the next few days.
What does that tell you?? They ALL were BROTHERS! We have NO right to spew hatred!

is it just me? or do other people here want to see what the eight members of Hunley's crew looked like after being sosked in water for 1-1/2 centuries? photos please.
