Congress Saves Incandescent Bulbs -- Too Bad They're Made in China Now

COMMENTARY | In December 2007 the Democrat controlled Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act, which, among other things, banned the sale of incandescent light bulbs in the U.S. as of next year. However, as reported by the Washington Times, "Congressional negotiators struck a deal" on Thursday that will give those light bulbs a stay of execution.

While the provision "doesn't actually amend the 2007 law," it does cut off all of the funding needed by the administration to enforce the law. Unfortunately, the only ones who will not benefit from this too little too late effort will be Americans.

Because of the pending ban and to avoid the greater expense of manufacturing incandescent bulbs at U.S. wage rates, General Electric closed its light bulb factories in Kentucky and Ohio in 2009 and moved production to China. Around 200 American jobs were lost.

In the company's news release, shared by the Washington Examiner, GE blamed the closings on the new energy regulations. What it failed to mention was that, as revealed in a 2008 report by Capital Research, GE is a member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, which pushed for those "new energy regulations." In fact, the creation of the group was "spearheaded" by GE's CEO, Jeff Immelt.

In October 2010, Heartland.org reported the closing of GE's incandescent bulb manufacturing plant in Winchester, Va. Two-hundred more Americans lost their jobs. The Virginia plant was the last major incandescent manufacturing facility in the United States.

In the meantime, although China had also vowed to convert to CFLs, a report cited by the U.K. Guardian in November by China's state news agency Xinhua revealed that -- while "imports and sales" of incandescent bulbs would be banned in China -- "exports" would still be allowed.

So, now that there are no more incandescent bulb factories in America and GE has moved production to China where labor is cheaper, guess who suddenly stands to make a killing with the "imports and sales" of incandescent bulbs that were once Made in America?

    You guessed it. Immelt.

Incidentally, Immelt is also the man Obama chose to be chairman of his President's Council of Jobs and Competitiveness. He was the one seated to Obama's left laughing when the president admitted those "shovel ready jobs weren't as shovel ready" as they had promised.

Ellen Cullman, who was seated and laughing to Obama's right, is chair of the board and CEO of DuPont. As reported by Delaware Inc., Cullman was "among a group of corporate leaders" -- including Immelt -- "who met with Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao in January to share ideas with the president, the premier and other business leaders on the important U.S.-China relationship."

DuPont also happens to be a member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership.

As described by the government's official website, "The President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness was created to provide nonpartisan advice to the president on continuing to strengthen the nation's economy and ensure the competitiveness of the United States and on ways to create jobs, opportunity, and prosperity for the American people."

Thus far, the only things Immelt, Cullen and the rest of their "partnership" have accomplished is weakening our economy, ensuring America cannot compete in the international market, creating jobs in China and creating opportunities for themselves to prosper at our expense.

Well... at least we know how many light bulb manufacturers it takes to screw an American.

got that right... this so called jobs adviser for the president sending 2000 jobs to china by closing a plant here in the united states....remember GENERAL ELECTRIC did not pay their fair share in taxes why because of sweet heart deals with this administration....
      • Bill W 5 mths ago
So why aren't the liberals screaming about obama taking money from GE and appointing Immelt as his economic adviser? Oh, that's right, not on their talking points.
    • michael k  •  5 mths ago
If you want to continue to get screwed buy your congressman, vote him/her back in. If you are tired of getting screwed every time congress does something, vote for either party, but don't vote for the incumbent. Lets see if we can get the attention of Washington. Don't buy a GE light bulb of any kind. Your congressman may have bought stock in it, because they knew this was coming, and you wouldn't want them to make a windfall profit for our pain.
      • Monty 5 mths ago
GE is not a profitable stock..

It was not very encouraging to watch an interview of GE's Welch and Pimco's CEO, El Erian. Welch did not have much to say as El Erian cited our approach to recovery as using the wrong bullets. Hard to disagree with the guy from Pimco.

Well Mr. Immelt, since you made billions in 2010, paid no taxes, got a nice big refund from the irs, move your lightbulb jobs back along with all the other industries you moved to china...problem solved. If the excuse is regulation, which it is, there's no regulation now. Since you are Obamas jobs chief, set an example, and stop taking taxpayer money for "green energy", you have enough of your own money to invest. Same thing goes for you dupont. Thanks. GE, Boeing, Wells Fargo,Exxon Mobil, American Electric Power, DuPont, Verizon, FedEx, Honeywell, IBM, Yahoo and United Technologies had a total profit of 170 billion dollars(over the last three years), yet on average they paid no taxes, they actually received tax payer money.

Doesn't anyone care that the CFL's contain mercury and burn out quickly. If they were safe and a good product we wouldn't need a law to force us to use them.
      • Cartigan 5 mths ago
Burn out quickly compared to what? You are wrong. People use dangerous #$%$ all the time. People LOVE using dangerous #$%$. If they were CHEAPER, we wouldn't need a law to "force" us to use them (by forcing companies to make more of them and therefore make them cheaper)
      • TheHunt4RedNovember 5 mths ago
"Burn out quickly compared to what?"

Um... compared to a standard, safer, cheaper, brighter, instant "on" incandescent bulb?

"People use dangerous #$%$ all the time."

Yeah... but we aren't talking about wood chippers here we're talking about a freaking light bulb. At least when you break an incandescent bulb you don't have to quarantine the room and follow a mandated, lengthy, expensive HAZMAT disposal protocol.

        YOU are wrong.
      • Davi 5 mths ago
My experience was that 5000 and 7000 Hr rated and major manufacture guaranteed CFL bulbs had a very noticably shorter life than 750 Hr rated incandecents running on the same circuit. Some failed CFL bulbs got very hot. Quality and safety, not CHEAPNESS are my concern.

why is it the the only people that benefit from anything this congress does are the rich and wealthy or another country?? what ever happend to a congress of the people for the people? what about americans? dont we deserve something too???

what ever happened to a congress of the people(corporations) for the people (corporations)? Corporations ARE WE THE PEOPLE!! The rest of us are just surfs!!
    • Jason  •  Richardson, United States  •  5 mths ago
Nothing new! Congress, Senate, every new committee formed by United States Government has only been helping themselves and the big corporations to prosper at the tax payers expense. all of the bankers on wall street should be tried for treason for the financial crimes they committed. Instead, taxpayers bail them out and they make billions in bonuses. Nothing really has changed in 2000 years.
    • John H  •  Baltimore, United States  •  5 mths ago
Immelt seemed to do something similar when he gave sunny news at GE, sold a boatload of shares, dropped a bomb, watched the stock plummet, and then bought his shares back. Maybe it's just an amazing coincidence, but in my opinion it looks like crime.
    • TheHunt4RedNovember  •  5 mths ago
If they really want to accomplish something, instead of diluting their efforts by scattering their demonstrations in cities from New York to California, perhaps the Occupy protesters should concentrate their efforts at 3135 Easton Turnpike in Fairfield, CT -- the site of GE's corporate headquarters.
    • Wise Old Girl  •  5 mths ago
Now, if only the light bulb would go on over the heads of our congressman like it does in cartoon strips and they'd realize what they're doing wrong and what it'll take to fix it.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  5 mths ago
The CFL bulbs are already being totally made in China. LED bulbs will replace the CFL, and they too are being made in China.

listen brainwashed Americans...Do you even know that the CEO of GE was the Headmaster who lobbied for "Free Trade" and "Globalization" together with other US Corporations in Congress more than a decade ago? Do you know what he said in a speech at one such meeting and who attended that meeting? Research..........................

Yup, let's keep our Chinese overlords happy!

So relieved we saved those bulbs. What you say? The jobs making them will go overseas? No, that doesn't make sense. Oh that's right, Congress was taking care of the jobs. I guess, I just didn't know they were taking care of China's jobs. Way to go Congress. Merry Christmas. Hurry home for your break!

Another example of the unintended consequences of stupid legislation.

But then, I wonder if they really were unintended consequences . I wonder how much GE paid those Democrat lawmakers to pass that law so they would have a reason to shift the jobs to China?

Those stupid CFLs never last their advertised lives. Never come close. I have had more die on me more quickly in the few years that I have used some than I ever had with the lowly incandescent bulbs.

Frankly, the better option will be the LED bulbs once the technology matures and they provide useful amounts of light without costing an arm and a log.
    • TheHunt4RedNovember  •  5 mths ago
For those who believe expensive, slower lighting, shorter life span, mercury laden CFL bulbs are better than the less expensive, instant "on" brighter burning, longer lasting incandescent bulbs -- Consider this: If you BREAK an incandescent bulb you simply throw it away. Break a CFL bulb and...

... as reported in the article, "Congressional Energy Plan Offers Choice of Bankruptcy or Mercury Poisoning" ---

"For hard surfaces, you must carefully scoop up the broken glass and powder using a stiff paper or cardboard, placing the debris and the paper/cardboard you used to scoop it up into a glass jar with a metal lid or a sealable plastic bag. However, since plastic bags won't prevent the mercury vapor from escaping, you are instructed to remove the bag from the home after clean-up so it can be released directly into the atmosphere rather than your home.

After cleaning up the big shards of broken CFL, you must now use something sticky, like duct tape, to pick up any remaining powder and glass fragments. Put the now-contaminated tape into your sealable toxic waste container of choice as well. Now it's time to wipe the area with clean, damp paper towels or other disposable item, and because, yes, these wiping items are also contaminated, you must throw those in your handy-dandy HAZMAT container as well.

The next step is to break out your vacuum cleaner. But wait, because of the air motion caused by the use of vacuums, you are instructed to keep a window open (if available) while sucking up the toxic mercury. Because re-use of the now contaminated vacuum cleaner will belch the housed mercury into your home when you use it the next time, you must add another step, depending on which vacuum cleaner style you have. For those who have vacuum cleaners with bags, you must remove the vacuum cleaner bag (even if it's brand new) and put it in with all of the other things you had to buy that were made out of trees that you are now going to throw away."

... and it gets even better if you break a CFL on CARPET!
    • PappaDoc  •  Lake Charles, United States  •  5 mths ago
Wow, an artical in Yahoo actually telling it like it is? I'm impressed, never thought I'd see it.

A few facts for the adorably ignorant "Music Player" and his tediously repetitious propaganda posts about CFL bulbs..

-- a Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulb uses 75% LESS ENERGY of a traditional incande(s)cent bulb -- and it has a notable "on" delay and is slow to reach maximum lumen output. Incandescent bulbs are instant "on" with immediate maximum lumen output.

-- a CFL bulb emits 75% less ENERGY not LESS MERCURY than a traditional incandec(s)ent bulb. Incandescent bulbs contain NO MERCURY!!!!

-- the higher priced CFL bulb will PAY FOR ITSELF IN SIX MONTHS -- unless you break one, after which you will quickly expend a tedious amount of time and money in order to dispose of the toxic material according to the government's CFL HAZMAT disposal protocol.

I guess this IDIOT POSTER is so desperate to convince others that he's smart he is now resorting to intentionally twisting facts and outright fabricating false information to hide the truth about CFL bulbs.

Didn't GE just shift their manufacturing of medical equipment to China? Or am I thinking of someone else?
