Stem cell researchers win $9.8 million under Connecticut grant program
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Twenty-three Connecticut-based researchers are sharing $9.8 million in funding from the state's stem cell research funds.
On Thursday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced the awards that will benefit researchers at Yale University, Wesleyan University, the UConn Health Center and a Farmington-based company called ImStem Biotechnology.
Stem cells are the body's foundation cells and can be manipulated to grow into all types of human tissue and organs. Scientists say they appear promising in finding cures for cancer, diabetes and other debilitating diseases.
"Connecticut's investment in stem cells continues to position the state on the cutting edge of biomedical research," said Malloy.
The award winners were competitively selected from a pool of more than 100 applications by an advisory committee chaired by the state's public health commissioner.
