    New Conscious Aging Education Program to Present Latest Health Research, Self-Discovery Exercises, and Peer Group Discussion To Guide Elders In Positive Transformation

    According to research by the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), education that supports positive transformation can significantly improve physical and psycho-social well-being in the third age of life (after 50). IONS will launch in January, 2012, an 8-week tele-class series for elders who face both distinct new opportunities as well as the experience of loss and letting go.

    Becoming an elder is less about chronological aging and more about transformation and growth in wisdom, love, and compassion for oneself and for others. According to research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), education that supports such positive transformation can significantly improve physical and psycho-social well-being in the third age of life (after 60). IONS will launch in January, 2012, a series of tele-classes for elders who face both distinct new opportunities as well as the experience of loss and letting go.

    Scientists and visionary educators in the field of conscious aging will lead the classes as live-to-your-living room teleconferences on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. PST between January 18 and March 7. Covering the latest research and best practices related to conscious aging, the live courses will emphasize small and large group discussion, which IONS’ research suggests is critical to the transformational process.     “At a time when the dominant societal view of one’s later years remains one of diminution, loss, and disengagement from active contribution to the larger community, proponents of conscious aging focus on the elder years as having the potential for wholeness, passions, purpose, spiritual growth, and commitment to serving the community, said Ron Pevny, founder of the Center for Conscious Eldering and one of the course leaders. “However, becoming such an elder doesn’t just happen; it is the result of conscious choices and preparation at all levels—physical, psychological and spiritual.”

    With the introduction of the Conscious Aging series, IONS has added a new level of flexibility to its tele-course programs: To accommodate the diverse availability of a world-wide audience, the classes also will be accessible as online self-study recordings. Also, participants can choose one, several, or all live events or a combination of live events and online study. Both live and online alternatives are supported by IONS’ extended online bibliography of teles-classes, books, articles and videos on conscious aging.

    Courses will cover myths and stereotypes; increasing presence and embracing impermanence; developing self-compassion; using intention as a guide to action; creating cross-generational connections; transforming subconscious beliefs of aging; end-of-life cosmologies, and harvesting the wisdom of your life. Individual classes will begin with a brief meditation and include two 15-minute presentations separated by self-expression exercise, reflection and sharing, and small- and large-group discussions. Classes will end with a Q&A session and recommendations for further online study.

    Presenters include Pevny, Phillip Moffet from the Life Balance Institute, Sue Steele of Compassion and Choices, Deborah Goldblatt and Ryan Feinstein of World Café, Tom Pinson of Recognition Rites, and Dr. Marilyn Schlitz, president and CEO of IONS. Katia Peterson and Ken Homer of The Worldview Literacy Project. The tele-classes will be hosted by Kathleen Erickson-Freeman, IONS elder education program manager.
