    The Consumer Justice Foundation Alerts Public to British Study That Reveals Alternative to Using Depakote To Avoid Potential Depakote Side Effects

The CJF hereby informs consumers of the results of a recent British study that concludes that an alternative to using Depakote and thereby encountering the risks associated with Depakote side effects could be a viable option for patients who need this type of help.

    The Consumer Justice Foundation, which is a for-profit corporation whose team of professional consumer advocates follows its mission of alerting the consumer public of the potential dangers of using certain prescription medications, hereby alerts the public of the results of a recent study performed in the United Kingdom that can potentially provide an alternative to using the anticonvulsant medication known as Depakote. This alternative could also allow pregnant women in particular to avoid the risk of Depakote side effects that have been linked to the use of this medication during the first trimester of pregnancy.

    The study, which was performed by researchers at the University College London, which was entitled, “The long-term outcome of adult epilepsy surgery, patterns of seizure remission, and relapse: a cohort study” and that was published on October 15, 2011 in The Lancet, tracked 615 patients who had undergone surgery to attempt to minimize the symptoms associated with epilepsy over an average of eight years.

    The study concluded that of those 615 patients who had undergone this surgical procedure, 63% of patients were epileptic seizure-free after two years, 52% were seizure-free after five years and 47% of patients were seizure-free after 10 years of having this surgery done. Overall, the longer that a patient remained seizure-free, the less likely they were to suffer from subsequent seizures.

    This study provides a potential alternative to people who have epilepsy but who cannot or who do not want to use anti-epileptic drugs such as Depakote, which is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. Depakote side effects have been allegedly found in children of mothers who had used this medication during the first trimester of their pregnancies. Specifically, Depakote birth defects have been linked to the use of this medication during this time. This surgical procedure does not present those same risks to pregnant women.
