    The Consumer Justice Foundation Alerts the Public to Upcoming Appearance by Makers of Topiramate-Containing Obesity Medication In Front of FDA Advisory Panel

    The Consumer Justice Foundation, a for-profit corporation whose Web site URL can be found at http://www.topamaxbirthinjury.com and whose staff is comprised of consumer advocates whose mission is to provide free online educational resources to consumers regarding the dangers posed by certain prescription medications, hereby alerts the public to an upcoming FDA Advisory Panel meeting. This FDA Advisory Panel meeting will be held to reconsider the obesity drug Qnexa, which was not approved previously and which contains topiramate, better known as Topamax.

    The Consumer Justice Foundation, a for-profit corporation whose team of professional consumer advocates provide free online educational resources regarding the potential dangers of certain prescription medications, hereby alerts the public of an imminent meeting of an FDA Advisory Panel to reconsider the application for approval of the sale of a new obesity drug known as Qnexa. Qnexa contains topiramate, which is commonly known as Topamax.

    Specifically, this FDA Advisory Panel will meet with the manufacturers of Qnexa, Vivus, Inc., on February 22, 2012 to discuss the concerns that were raised with the original application regarding Qnexa that led to it not being approved for use in the United States in October of 2010. This advisory panel will consider arguments and evidence presented by Vivus, Inc. that could lead to its approval for marketing and sale in the United States.

    Qnexa is an obesity medication that contains topiramate, which is otherwise known as Topamax, but Qnexa was originally not approved by the FDA because of concerns regarding the potential for children of mothers who would use Qnexa to develop oral clefts, which were commonly alleged as Topamax side effects. One of the purposes of this upcoming FDA Advisory Panel meeting is for Vivus to provide the FDA with additional data regarding the potential for users to develop oral clefts and other side effects before it obtains approval from the agency.
