    The Consumer Justice Foundation Discusses the FDA’s Approval of Updated Labels for Diabetes Medication Actos

    The Consumer Justice Foundation, an organization of consumer advocacy professionals who provide a free educational and informational resource for consumers regarding the potential dangers of different medications, hereby discusses the approval by the Food and Drug Administration, or the FDA, of updated labels for the diabetes medication that’s known as Actos. The containers of Actos will now clearly warn of the potential dangers of Actos side effects that could be encountered by some patients.

    Specifically, Actos has been linked to the possibility of an increased risk for bladder cancer in those patients who have used this diabetes medication for more than one year. Actos has been banned in different countries in Europe and it came under FDA scrutiny for the alleged link between patients who have had a history of bladder cancer and the risk of developing the disease after using Actos to control diabetes.

    The FDA approved the new label that’s been approved by the agency states that patients should, “Contact their healthcare professional if they experience any sign of blood in the urine or a red color in the urine or other symptoms such as new or worsening urinary urgency or pain on urination since starting pioglitazone, as these may be due to bladder cancer.”

    The FDA also directed medical professionals that they should not use pioglitazone, the active ingredient in Actos, in patients with active bladder cancer. Medical professionals, according to the FDA, should also use pioglitazone with caution in patients with a prior history of bladder cancer. These steps should allow patients to minimize their risk of facing the development of Actos side effects.
