'Contraband' swipes No. 1 spot at box office

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Contraband" managed to steal the top slot away from competitors at the weekend box office.

The Universal action drama film starring Mark Wahlberg as a reformed smuggler debuted above expectations at No. 1 with $24 million, while Disney's 3-D rerelease of "Beauty and the Beast" waltzed into the No. 2 position with $18.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Both films helped boost Hollywood's business after a sluggish holiday season.

"It's great to have an uptick in the total box office, and Universal is thrilled that 'Contraband' was the driving force behind that," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for the studio. "I think it's combination of a great marketing campaign, audiences love Mark Wahlberg and (producer) Working Title made a terrific movie, particularly for the cost."

"Joyful Noise," the Warner Bros.' musical comedy starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, opened below expectations with $11.3 million in the No. 4 spot behind Paramount's "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," which earned $11.5 million in its fifth week, bringing the total haul of the fourth installment of the Tom Cruise action franchise to $186.7 million.

"The Devil Inside," Paramount's horror film that scared up a massive $33.7 million debut last weekend, experienced a steep 77 percent drop in its second weekend, coming in at No. 6 with $7.9 million. Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian said the film's terrifying plunge didn't matter because the independently produced movie has already made a huge profit.

"Horror movies typically drop big, but that is a huge drop," said Dergarabedian. "It doesn't matter because 'Devil Inside' is a profit-making machine. If your budget is low enough, who cares if it drops big and you're making money? It's already one of the most profitable films of the past year, so there's nothing really to complain about there."

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," ''War Horse" and "The Iron Lady" were the only Golden Globes contenders that managed to crack the top ten ahead of Sunday's ceremony. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" fell to the No. 7 spot in its fourth week of release, while "War Horse" galloped into the No. 9 position. "Iron Lady" rounded out the list at No. 10.

"The Artist," which leads this year's Globes race with six nominations, earned $1.1 million at No. 14, and the George Clooney family drama "The Descendants," which is tied for second place with "The Help" with five nominations, surfed away with $2 million at No. 13. Other contenders, such as "The Help" and "Midnight in Paris," left theaters last year.

Overall domestic revenues totaled $130 million, on par with the same weekend last year, when "The Green Hornet" led with $33.5 million and the box office totaled $130.1 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

I'm not sure how people can say Contraband was really good. At best it is okay. The entire plot is a modified version of gone in sixty seconds.
      • doh 4 mths ago
yeah whats your point? its still great. loser
      • Catherine 4 mths ago
Ludarue, I havent seen the movie and probably wont until it comes out on HBO and there's nothing else on TV that night. However, Im pretty sure I agree with you. Its the same plot over and over again. Last really original great movie Mark Walhberg was in was The Departed

      • Liberal 4 mths ago
Well forget Hollywood Richardson. What does the "Texas Film Industry" have to offer us?
      • ERICK 4 mths ago
Post - converted films to 3D are the worst by the way... They don´t improve the film and look cheapy

Let me sumarize Contraband for you and alot of other Mark Wahlberg films, does this sound familiar. " I'm out, I dont do that anymore"...."but you're the best there's no one else" yada yada ya....something personal gets him involved so he goes back reluctantly. He blows stuff up, has some sex and beats the bad guys then goes back to his life with a new sense of self. I havent seen the movie yet but tell me if I missed something.
      • Antonio 4 mths ago
only thing wrong is that he doesnt have sex lol

Does the wife get killed in this movie? I don't want to have to sit through it, so please let me know, does the wife get killed?
      • Ryan 4 mths ago
Not necessarily disagreeing with you Catherine, but what other movies from Marky Mark follow that script? You say there are a lot so please name 3 movies that involve the "I'm out, I don't do that anymore" plot. I'll even give you one: Shooter. Now name 2 other than Contraband and Shooter.

If it came out No. 1 Why is the pic of Beauty and the Beast?
    • Your mom's boyfriend  •  Las Vegas, Nevada  •  4 mths ago
There are no good movies to compete against, so it's GREAT by default, it might as well be Matt Dillon's ARMORED.
    • BlackEuro  •  Salt Lake City, Utah  •  4 mths ago
The only original and unique movies i watched lately were INCEPTIOn, TIME and LIMITLESS... Those are movies qwith unique concept and and movies that you could not guess the ending etc... This is the type of movies Hollywood should make, not the same old, same old crapppp!
      • Ryan 4 mths ago
What is Time? Are you talking about In Time with Justin Timberlake or a different movie? I'm not trying to correct you. I just want to know if you are referring to a different movie to find out if it is worth watching.
      • _____ 4 mths ago
Don't talk about it, be about it. I don't believe that anyone is forceing you to see the same old movies as you call them. Go out and show them how it's done!

Unfortunately no matter how good critics in the US may claim Joyful Noise is, it's not a profitable movie worldwide. Nobody in Latin America has ever heard of Dolly Parton and while Queen Latifah has a lot of name recognition and she's a great actress, a 2 hour musical movie starring an unknown country singer singing gospel music (a music genre nobody listens to in Latin America which only has about 700 million inhabitants) just won't make a profit outside of the US.

On the other hand, Contraband whether it's a rehash of a movie made 13 years ago has a simple plot, lot's a bombs and Mark is a good actor so even if it might not be a great movie, it will attract curious people to go turn off their brains for 2 hours, hence why it's still doing pretty well. It probably will continue to make bank because it hasn't premiered in most regions of Latin America yet. This is the kind of movie a lot of people with real $ in their pocket will wish to go see even if plotwise it isn't the most awesome film out there.
      • Tim 4 mths ago
Nobody listens to gospel, don't have to be latin to not like musicals
      • scrotymcboogerballs 4 mths ago
plus who the f likes queen fatifah
      • brian 4 mths ago
I won't see "Joyful Noise" because it looks like sugar-coated, barf-inducing garbage. Plus, I couldn't care less about Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, so I'm definitely passing on it.

"Contraband" is a forgettable action film with not much suspense or action. Every actor is wasted.

    • Tem  •  4 mths ago
LOL! They used a picture of Beauty and the Beast even though Contraband won. Oops did someone at AP who set up this article for posting guess wrong about which movie was going to be number 1 today? Oops...

    • william8  •  4 mths ago
Something is out of whack here. What is it with all these re-do of movies? I don't need to see a re-make of a movie because it is in 3D. That is why they have "bootleg copies."
    • brandon  •  Fayetteville, North Carolina  •  4 mths ago
contraband completly sucked don't waste your money.
    • REAL DEAL  •  Pompano Beach, Florida  •  4 mths ago
I just watch classic movies i don't waste my precious time trying to understand the inane plots with everything blowing-up burning down or being swept away or shot full of holes like the script.

With TV shows like Criminal Minds, Flashpoint, Law and Order SVU, and many other "good guy bad guy" shows why go out on a cold winter's night to see Contraband. Just more of the same.
    • ERICK  •  Centro, Mexico  •  4 mths ago
I thought B&B 3D will hit the #1 spot this weekend!!

Hope this stop the trend to convert classic films in 3D (Star Wars episode 1, Titanic, Finding Nemo will shows us if 3D really works or the surprising Lion King revenue was only good luck).
