A nanny was under arrest after a mother and her 3-year-old child returned home to their apartment on New York's affluent Upper West Side to discover her other two children stabbed to death in their bathtub, police officials said.
The nanny accused of killing the children, ages 1 and 6, was on the bathroom floor with apparently self-inflicted wounds to her neck, WABC-TV in New York reported.
The nanny, under arrest, was in critical condition at an area hospital, police said.
The victims were all taken to a nearby hospital as police cars stayed at the scene stopping traffic at rush hour.
The mother arrived home around 5:30 p.m. to discover the nanny with the knife still in her hand, police said. After 911 calls, police and ambulances quickly responded to the building called La Rochelle, according to WABC-TV in New York.
Police initially gave the dead children's ages as 3 and 5.
