Cops: Two 15-Year-Old Girls Found Dead at High School; Gun Was Next To Their Bodies

Two sophomore students were found shot to death in an isolated spot on their high school campus, and a firearm was next to them, authorities said Friday. 

The bodies of the 15-year-old girls were next to each other at Independence High School in Glendale, police said.

"They were found next to each other and the weapon was beside them," Glendale Police Officer Tracey Breeden said. 

Each suffered a single gunshot wound and their relationship was not immediately known.

The campus was intially put on lockdown, but police said the school is now secured and there was never an active shooter. 

"We were on scene in less than two minutes," Breeden said. Police said the would not identify the students.

But one of the girls was identified as May Kieu, according to Phuong Kieu, her sister.

After news of the shooting, worried parents gathered outside the school.

"We were in front of the school and we heard two loud shots like someone was popping a bag or something," a student at the school told her mom over the phone, CBS affiliate KPHO reported.

In a statement on Facebook, the Glendale Union High School District confirmed the school was on lockdown early Friday.

"Police have secured the campus," it said. "There is no active shooter on campus. The investigation is ongoing. The campus remains on lock down and no one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the police have lifted the lock down and ensured the safety of the school."
