Coroner: 7-year-old boy drowned in a pool in Springfield

The Sangamon County Coroner confirmed Monday that a 7-year-old boy drowned in a pool at a home in the Indian Hills subdivision Saturday.

The boy was unresponsive and submerged in the deep end of an in-ground pool at a home in the 2300 block of Winnebago Drive when Springfield Police officers arrived at approximately 12:30 p.m., said Deputy Chief Sara Pickford.

Pickford didn't know how long the child was submerged.

He was taken to HSHS St. John’s Hospital and was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 1 p.m. shortly after his arrival.

The child's name has not been released.

Coroner Jim Allmon said in a news release that an autopsy was done Monday and preliminary findings were "consistent with drowning."

Heather Tarczan, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, confirmed to The State Journal-Register that the agency is looking into the case.

The death remains under investigation by SPD and the coroner’s office.
