Coroner seeking Houston medical, pharmacy records

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles County coroner's office has issued subpoenas for medical and pharmacy records from Whitney Houston's doctors and medical providers, which is standard procedure in such investigations, an official said Wednesday.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said the request is made in virtually all death investigations because it can shed additional light on how people died and whether they had any serious medical conditions.

"We've already contacted a number of doctors with requests for records," he said.

Winter said that at this point, there is nothing unusual about how his office is proceeding with the Houston death investigation.

Investigators found several bottles of prescription medication in the Beverly Hills, California, hotel room where Houston died Saturday, although Winter has said they weren't an unusually large number. Detectives have declined to disclose which medications were found.

Authorities said an autopsy found no indications of foul play or obvious signs of trauma. Houston was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub, officials said.

It could be weeks before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.

Houston died just hours before she was scheduled to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards party. Her family plans a private church service Saturday in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey. The Associated Press will provide a pool camera and stream the service on livestream.com/aplive, said publicist Kristen Foster.

Houston, a sensation from her first album in 1985, was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," ''How Will I Know," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You."

But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.

Interest in her music has skyrocketed since her death, pushing her songs back on to charts and into heavy rotation on the radio.

Medical records have become crucial in celebrity death investigations, including inquiries into what killed actor Corey Haim, actress Brittany Murphy and pop superstar Michael Jackson. Haim's death was caused by pneumonia and not drug-related, the coroner's office ruled. Prescription medications were cited as a contributing factor in Murphy's death, which coroner's determined was caused by pneumonia and severe anemia. Murphy, who was ill in the days before she died in December 2009, showed no signs of drug abuse, a coroner's report stated.

Jackson's personal physician, Conrad Murray, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the singer's death. He had been giving the entertainer nightly doses of the anesthetic propofol in Jackson's bedroom as a sleep aid but kept no records of the treatments.

Law enforcement can access California's prescription drug monitoring database known as CURES, which contains more than 100 million prescriptions and receives anywhere from 4 to 6 million additions every month. The data culled from pharmacies can determine whether doctors are prescribing outside the course of normal medical practice and see if a patient is getting multiple prescriptions from various physicians, commonly known as doctor shopping.

Gov. Jerry Brown touted the CURES program several years ago when he was attorney general, and under his leadership high-profile investigations were launched into the deaths of Jackson, Haim and Anna Nicole Smith.

In the Smith case, charges eventually were filed against two doctors and her boyfriend-lawyer in connection with her death after the database showed the former Playboy Playmate was receiving a myriad of prescription drugs. A jury acquitted the trio of most to all of the felony counts and a judge dismissed two convictions, while reducing one to a misdemeanor.

I go into my Doc with severe back pain and he looks at me like I'm a drug addict fondling his cell phone like hes about to call the cops. But these celebrities can buy thousands of pills even hospital surgery anisthetics from doctors? What the hell is wrong with that picture? Who are the REAL drug dealers in society people?? I guarantee you they had to subpeona them because the doctors wouldn't give them up. Someone is going to jail for profiteering for big pharma again, the largest, most despicable, international drug cartel on EARTH.

Aaaaah, haaaa. I had damaged disks in my neck from a car accident and had to go to the Dr. Well the Dr. had her hair dyed BLUE, and told me she would need to "do a drug screening" on me. When it came back negative she just played it off. Like you have blue hair and you have the audacity to want to drug screen me!!! The nerve!

WA pharmacies are linked so you can't grab narcs in say, Seattle, then pick up more the following day in Tacoma. They also charge and prosecute offenders for (can anyone say Rush Limbaugh) defrauding a provider

Quit making doctors responsible, if an adult is that stupid, then that is there tought luck. and if people stand by and watch, then they helped kill her, not the doctors
    • dadude  •  San Mateo, California  •  3 mths ago
Oh no. Let's not have another celebrity doctor prescribing drugs to a patient that doesn't need them, only to see them die from it. Let's not have another MJ.

Seems like the trend now is everytime some drug addicted Hollywood star or singer takes an overdose on their own and dies, some doctor pays the price. . . absolving the singer / star of any responsibility for their own actions.
      • Mary 3 mths ago
Blaming the doctor absolves those popping up with stories of their undying love for her from guilt and allows them to refocus their anger on someone other than Whitney Houston. This should serve as a wake-up call for celeb's and average-Joe's everywhere who think, "It'll never happen to me."

This was the tragic loss of a tremendous talent. Yes, she had drug problems. All the more reason any legal drugs such as pain killers need to used with extreme caution. The doctors should know better.

We teach our children that they are accountable for their actions, but thats not the case when you grow up. When will people be held accountable for what they do to themselves.

An amazing voice-great talent...totally addicted, out of control and dead at 48. We are all cheated but she did it all by herself with the encouragement of all her promoters, so called friends and family.
She was in "celebrity" kid glove rehab last May. She mixed "prescription drugs"-opiates with alcohol- a deadly cocktail. Her so called friends knew she displayed erratic behavior-but then maybe for her and them this is all normal! hand stands by the pool, running around with her hair wet, barging into a taping interview, she's 48 years old for goodess sake-this is not normal. Did anyone of her friends or promotors take notice THEN?
They were all drinking "Champagne"- are they so stupid-the woman had an alcohol problem-that is alcohol-does- 2 and 2 not add up to 4-i guess not in their world.
Opiates stop/slow respiration-at any time-she stopped breathing-she could have been dead before she even hit the water-they will find out.But she is gone.
The awards would have made more of an impact if they made something positive out of all this -but instead it was the same old ,same olde. We all feel bad about "it".
Inappropriate-you bet it is-wrong-absolutely-we are all cheated.
She is now glorified and if they could they would make her into a saint they would.
She went thru over 100 million dollars since 2002!-are we serious?
We are all saddened by the loss of this great talent, but I'm afraid she left us a long time ago.

I just saw an interview that she did for the movie Sparkle that she just finished. In the interview, she seemed, great, smiling, just normal... Now I'm not to versed on how people act when they're on drugs etc. So I don't know if this is normal....

This should be interesting. Has the Doctor use their utmost judgement to forewarn Whitney about the danger of mixing alcohol with medication before prescribing her the medication. Did they ask if she is an alcoholic / addict? Did they put in her chart that she is an alcoholic / addict Did they ask if she has another providers Alcoholic / addict are known to be good in doctor shopping until they find a Doctor to prescribe them what they want. It is called drug seeking behavior. Steve P.;Lakewood, WA

A total waste of great talent. However I get tired of so called friends and family expressing their sorrow and concern when they did nothing when she was alive and really needed their help. How good a friends were they if they did not see how real her problems and watch her slowly kill herself.

200,000 deaths a year linked to prescription drug use, even when used according to instructions. The medical / pharma / FDA are all about profits, passing out drugs like candy with terrible side effects (when did "death" become a "side effect"?).
Let's hold drug companies and doctors legally accountable and get this under under control before many more lives are lost.
P.S. Visit the "Industry of Death" for more facts on this by going to: cchr . org

the sad thing about all these inquires into the docs and the med's records ..yes its messed up when these docs do this for celebs but in truth we all know if it wasn't one doc it'd be another or another or another.....all of these docs are people and when they meet these celebs i think it does something to them..they think they know them they think they are gods and can do no wrong they are star struck ,same as anyone else would be and really i think to put total blame on a doc when this happens is unfair..it should be 50/50 half the doc half the celeb..the celeb for using their money and fame and power to influence these docs and docs for falling for it ...i know a lot of supposed good people in the world who have been turned by money and docs are no diff ,they are people too...so really when a celeb uses this power over people just like MJ,Elvis,Anna Nicole,Marilyn Monroe, alllll of them did its just as bad as the doc giving them the med,s to begin with.....they use these poor regular people to get what they want and then the rest of the star struckers want someone to blame so they pic the doc....these doctors should be held accountable but i think not to the extreme that they are being and have been in the past....
