Judge: Former Spanish party treasurer held more money in Swiss bank than previously suspected
MADRID (AP) -- A former treasurer of Spain's ruling party held more money than previously suspected — up to 47 million euros — in secret Swiss bank accounts, according to a judge investigating alleged corruption at the heart of the country's political system.
National Court Judge Pablo Ruz said in a court statement Friday that documents received from Switzerland revealed Luis Barcenas had more than the 38 million euros in Swiss accounts he acknowledged when question by the judge in February.
At the time, the judge ordered Barcenas to surrender his passport. Barcenas told Ruz he had earned the money through business investments not related to his post as treasurer.
Barcenas was treasurer of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's Popular Party from 2008 to 2009, and a senator from 2004 to 2010.
