    Costa Concordia Cruise Ship by the Numbers

    The Costa Concordia is listed as the largest cruise ship in the fleet of ships owned by Costa Cruises in Italy. When the ship ran aground off the western coast of Italy on Friday night, the severity of the accident was known to passengers immediately as the ship began listing on its side. ABC News reported passengers said they had to help themselves get out of the ship as the crew didn't know what to do.

    Here's a look at the Costa Concordia ship and disaster, by the numbers.

    4,234: People on board the ship when it left port. That includes approximately 1,000 crew members.

    3,700: Passengers the Costa Concordia can hold. CostaConcordia.info states there can also be a crew of 1,100, bringing the maximum capacity to 4,800. The vessel has 17 decks.

    126: American citizens on the Costa Concordia. The American embassy in Rome is attempting to help Americans get home and contact loved ones in the U.S., according to ABC News.

    5: People confirmed dead. Three of the deaths were reported immediately. Two more bodies were discovered later by Italian coast guard divers.

    17: People still missing nearly three full days after the accident. There are 11 passengers and six crew members unaccounted for as per Tuscany's regional president.

    160: Feet wide the gash in the hull is estimated to be. The ship struck a reef or rocks close to the eastern shoreline of Giglio, an island off the western coast of Italy.

    950: Feet long the Costa Concordia measures. It was the largest ship in the fleet of one of the largest cruise lines in Europe.

    60: Nationalities on board when it ran aground. AFP reports the diverse population of vacationers hampered rescue efforts due to language barriers.

    16: Ships in the Costa fleet. Each has its own theme such as movies, music, a fairytale castle and even ancient Roman gods. Costa is owned by Carnival Cruise Lines and is based in Genoa, Italy.

    10: Years the captain of ship has worked for Costa cruises. A statement released by the company reports a "significant human error" by Capt. Francesco Schettino led to the accident. Schettino joined the company as a safety officer in 2002 on board the Costa Crociere. He became a captain in 2006.

    100 million: Dollars of losses Carnival Cruise Lines might face regarding the accident. That includes taking the ship out of service, repairing the vessel and a reduction in people taking cruises. Carnival owns more than 100 ships worldwide under several brands, according to USA Today.

      I live in Indiana. I have just seen the first Commercial for lawyers trying to get their hands in on this. The commercial is for maritime law, saying if you have been hurt on a commercial vessel, oil rig, and tug boat, or on the job injuries then call. At the very end they slipped in if you have been hurt on a cruise ship then call. Its jut good to know that someone is ready to cash in on this.

      The captain was a safety officer for 4 years, and his crew did not know what to do?
      Look like, they have never seen "A night to remember?" or Titanic.
      And never had a disaster / accident drill.
      Unlike the captain of Titanic who sank with the ship, he saved his own skin.

        The thought of the Titanic's day was those modern steel ships were their own life boats. After Captain Smith learned the ship was lost he did little to reduce the loss of life; there were empty seats in the life boats for half those lost.

      I've got news for Carnival. That ship cannot be salvaged. The decks on their sides are now distorted and the metal has been bent. I cannot be bent back into shape. It is very unlikely given the number of windows under water that there is any practical way to seal the side of the ship enough to "pump water" out whether or not the hull itself is sealed as it is exposed where the damage is. This ship will have to be torn apart mostly with explosives and the scrap scooped up into barges. Folks that bill alone will be tens of millions, possibly over 100 million. Then there is the loss of the ship itself, it sounds as if Carnival has it insured, but you can bet that boat cost close to a billion bucks. And then you have Italian courts along with NO sympathy from Italy towards the owner of this ship, they may have a 70,000 dollar limit on lawsuits but when you multiply that times 3200 that comes to 224 Million dollars and that is assuming the captain is NOT found guilty of willfully driving the ship into the rocks. It appears that may not fly so the lawsuits could get over a billion. Carnival has done a remarkable job hiding its culpability in this mess as I have had some idiot commenter’s state this was not a Carnival owned ship, guess again fools.

      Carnival will just increase the prices on all the other cruises to balance the books. This accident is nothing to them. They will blame the captain and walk away. They hired the #$%$ Carnival's CEO should ALSO be held responsible.
