Could BAFTAs Foretell Oscar Nomination Domination for 'Lincoln' Tomorrow?

With Oscar nominations less than a day away, the Brits have weighed in with their version — and their top choice, is, well, rather American. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln received 10 nominations this morning from the British Academy Film Awards (the BAFTAs), the most of any film. Lincoln also topped the list of nominations for the Golden Globes, which arrive on Sunday.

In the BAFTAs, Lincoln was followed by Les Misérables, which also scored a nomination for Outstanding British Film, and Life of Pi — each scored nine nominations. That said, Spielberg, along with Les Miz director Tom Hooper, got shut out of the directing category. Though Skyfall, which The Hollywood Reporter's Stuart Kemp explained had been talked about as a possible contender for best film, did not sneak into that top category, it did land eight nods, including nominations for supporting actors Javier Bardem and Judi Dench.

So does Lincoln's across-the-pond success mean it's going to take it all when it comes to Thursday morning's Oscar announcement? Jill Lawless at the Associated Press reported that the BAFTAs "have helped underdog films including 'Slumdog Millionaire,' 'The King's Speech' and 'The Artist' gain momentum for Oscars success." While Lincoln is by no means an Oscar underdog (it practically screams Oscar) this is just another sign of its possible nomination domination. Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian wrote "Academy voters know that this is a film they can support in good faith." Also at The Guardian Catherine Shoard explained that "the film therefore heads into the Oscar race (which begins tomorrow when the nominations are announced) as clear frontrunner."

We'll see bright and early tomorrow if it rakes in the most Oscar nods.
